IP Week London Feb 2018

I was lucky to attend the UK Energy Institute's IP Week in London. On this four minute video are my six key takeaways:

  1. Carbon pricing is implemented in over 40 counties. One eighth of all emissions worldwide are covered.
  2. Energy transition will only happen with increasing regulation. Oil and gas companies are walking the talk and investing in new energies. Are they doing enough to drive the narrative or are governments advocating certain technologies that might produce the wrong answer?
  3. Electric and Autonomous Vehicles - EVs and AVs will be 300m out of a global fleet of 2 billion by 2040. The world’s energy demand will still be rising although on a plateaued growth curve. Carbon emissions will still be rising. Look at the power sector if you want the world to reduce emissions.
  4. Was there enough discussion at this conference on the people agenda? Skills, professional qualifications, talent development and diversity?
  5. China’s power generation capacity will grow by the equivalent of a USA - India by an EU - by 2040.
  6. IMO sulphur content in marine fuel means companies need to have taken action by now. If not, should they start now or wait and see?
