IOT - a sort of definition

Since 2013 one of my friends and I started this conversation on what is IOT and what we should do about it. Once a week we exchange on this subject. We both lived 2000's .com invasion and we both see now that IOT will be much bigger and diverse.

The formal definition, in fact an acronym, is Internet Of Things - I think this is evasive and does not define anything. My first attempt is to define IOT as a mesh of small and medium devices that are able to communicate somehow and, eventually, will send part or most of the messages to another mesh. Please observe that there is no Internet involved. Maybe, somehow, those Things will send an aggregated message to Internet.

We started by observing that people want something (products, services, information etc) now, as personalised as possible and, most of the time, related to the place where they are at that specific moment: I-Want-Something-Here-Now (IWSHN). Following this paradigm we discovered that this phenomenon already happens: most of smartphone users are looking at something here and now, but most of the time it is not that Something that they want Here and Now. We build a couple of POCs - based on localised advertising, instant promo, enhanced shopping experience and most important - low dependency on instant Internet access and connection. In our POC we assumed that if you know, let say 30-60 minutes in advance, where you want to go and what you are looking for what you will get is IWSHN, with a little preparation in advance or the mobile device will do it for you based on your profile.

A second attempt to define IOT is personalised, instant customer experience via all available electronic devices. Note the local nature of this experience, again no need to have an Internet connection. In this case we focus on user experience, and this is something that will certainly change. Like Internet changed the world. My view is that IOT will change our lives, the way we will behave, interact and exchange information with our digital environment.

A third attempt is to define IOT as "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict", for those who know Pink Floyd. It will be something that can only be described after we invent the words, right now we are associating words and concepts just to say something about IOT without being able to define it. For the moment defining IOT does not have the proper words to be described it.

We invite you to enrol in our adventure, to conquer this new technological landscape. If you consider yourself brave enough and you want to have fun being the first who invents and delivers the future we will be delighted to share with you our projects. We are looking for investors, technology passionates, design innovators and most important team mates!

Let's build the future together!
