IOT, Smart Technology, and Humans

Have you noticed the inverse relationship between smart technology and humans??Just ask a college student to calculate something without their phone and you'll see what I mean. Techies are aware of this, which no doubt led to "The Internet of Things" (IOT).

What exactly IS IOT? It's certainly getting a lot of buzz.

Simply put, it's tech that enables 'things' to communicate with each other, free of pesky human interference. Self driving cars, speed limits and traffic lights are one example. For my purposes, 'things' are industrial mechanical systems.

The top perceived benefits of interconnecting these “things” include:

  • Improved efficiency (data transfers are free of human errors)
  • Cost savings through automation (the human workforce is reserved for human-essential tasks, so plants run with minimal staff)

However, as humans are still involved in the set up of IOT, once again we are back to the old data dilemma: Garbage in -- Garbage out. ?

And while systems can share data, they can't anticipate issues, troubleshoot or think creatively.

Why has no-one called BS on IOT??Trust in tech has gone too far. IOT is a network, not a solution. I foresee it causing history to repeat itself through implementation failures like we saw with Enterprise Resource Management (ERP) and Enterprise Asset Management (EAM).

The biggest red flag? When embracing IOT, you won't have any clue there's an issue until you experience a massive, unanticipated failure.

Are you getting dazzled by the shiny new object called IOT??Do you know what its limits are when it comes to maintenance management information? Are you aware those limitations exist? Come find out and join me on March 18 to learn how to get government funding for a proven Failure Prevention Process that fits your needs. There's no cost to participate in this Zoom Webinar, and much value will be delivered, so reserve your seat now. https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_wy3SY2QIRCSCnMxfKj0bpw?#maintenancemanagement #reliability #grantwriting #chieffinancialofficer #chiefoperatingofficer

To much dependence on machines and technology led to losing inherent human intelligence. Comforts zones are obvious reasons in millennials for such dependence. Hope I catched your point ??James Reyes-Picknell

I’ve been know to call BS on some of the wilder unfounded claims, the truth hurts though for some?? Most of what I see is technology chasing a problem not the other way around, it started with electric windows in cars... who can’t wind a handle??♂?
