IOT Security Predictions for 2020 and Beyond

IoT is growing up but it's also growing teeth. We are seeing IoT mature before our eyes, but as it does grow and expand we're seeing a vast array of new risks and new issues that IoT can cause.

It wasn't so very long ago that the idea of Internet of Things security was something that people said simply couldn't be done. Given the wide array of IoT insecurities displayed, including taking over of smart buildings and the major DdoS attack, even some of the experts were saying that IoT security was an oxymoron.

IoT security appears to be a "cat and mouse" game according to Brian Buntz and some of the other experts. How will that play out in 2020?

Smart Buildings Will Be More of a Concern

The prospect of smart buildings and the way in which smart buildings have been hacked in the past will leave to a smart building security becoming one of the number one priorities for Iot and smart building managers. In 2020 smart buildings will account for 8 out of 10 of the connected devices. Smart buildings are projected to be one of the top targets however the experts are significantly devided about whether or not there will be a dramatic upsurge in the attacks on smart buildings.

Some experts, such as Mirel Sehic, Honeywell Building Solutions global director of cybersecurity expects such an increase in the coming year. He believes that attackers will use building management systems to get to IT data and manipulate building controls.

“I don’t know that we’ll see more threats there next year,” said Andrew Howard, chief executive officer of Kudelski Security. To back up that statement, Howard said the networks inside many buildings are highly segmented. “And so while there might be one system that’s internet-connected, the reality is that most of them are not.”

The Market will Swell Dramatically for Managed Security Services.

According to a research poll from Kenneth Research, one of the fasted growing types of consultng is managed security services which are growing at a rate of about 15% per year. In the last five years, a wide range of companies have given up on the idea of managing their own security knowing that they simply do not have the capacity to do so.

The CEO OF Kudelski Security believes that they will see more people seeking out their services today in order to provide for the kind of security that companies need and cannot provide for their own company. The newest trend is to outsource the security and get it done by professionals rather than in-house.

"One change that I’ve seen in the market is more of a willingness by bigger companies to bring in a managed security provider for pieces of the security puzzle, but not all of it. So in the past, they would have insourced everything or outsourced everything. I think we’re seeing a lot more hybrid models,” Howard commented.

Sweeping Security Under the Rug Will be a Thing of the Past

In many cases when it came to security, companies would be in a rush to get to market and when that was the case, the market got top billing and the security was low priority. While no company actually wants to avoid the security they need. When it comes to having to  spend the time and delaying the market for a while that sometimes cannot happen. Expect to see a lot more companies being absolutely diligent about security in 2020 and beyond.

Some Measure of Legislation

Expect to see some measure of IoT and online security legislation taking place that makes companies culpable for problems if they were not diligent about security.
