IoT Platform Disillusionment
Most IoT platforms - including those from household name vendors - are actually nothing more than configurable IoT apps:
- They collect, store and display sensor data (ex: temperature, RPM, location) of your remote assets
- They notify you when sensor data meet certain conditions
- You may send commands (ex: stop engine, download new firmware) to your remote assets
This may initially appear like an attractive value proposition. But it only is a minuscule step towards addressing your REAL business pains, like:
- How do I ensure 90%+ uptime of my remote assets?
- How do I reduce by 30% the cost of servicing my remote assets while increasing my Net Promoter Score by 20 points?
- How do I generate 10% incremental recurring revenue through the sale of a real-time supply chain monitoring app to my customers?
What do those IoT "platforms" propose to help you address these REAL business pains? Just a bunch of API's which you have to code your business app against...
*sigh*
Technologies like ThingWorx enable you to quickly and easily develop, deploy and extend your own IoT apps (and AR experiences) which tackle your REAL business challenges and deliver quantifiable outcomes.

7 年I agree, Jerzy Rymarczuk: most so-called IoT platforms are barely good enough to collect, store and display simple IoT sensor data. But they are just not real business applications, nor can they allow you to build them more quickly, easily.

7 年Hi Luc, I think all is correct if you are referring to simple IOT sensors. For predictive maintenance you need Data analytics. The future is all about data in IOT solutions/ industry 4.0.

7 年Luc Perard Thanks for sharing you are right on. Platform providers need to look at ways to make their platforms smart, and integrate AI, so the platform can take action based on the information they receive from the sensors or machines.
