The IoT Job Market. What Does the Future Look Like?

Technology is not without those who are made nervous by it. It has been a recurring nightmare for people since the dawn of the internet that technology was going to take their jobs, leaving them poor and unable to support their families.

This is not a new fear and frankly is not entirely unfounded. In the early industrial revolution some areas of automation did in fact cost jobs. While these changes created new jobs, in many cases the jobs were more technical and did not require unskilled laborers, many of whom did lose out.

Nearly every company in the world is undergoing some measure of digitization which is creating a serious shift in the way in which companies are considering their future staffing needs as well as the way in which they are recruiting.

The change is doing more than just reshaping the bottom line of the company but it is further changing the way in which they build a team as well as they way they grow the teams.

Technology will continue to impact nearly every workplace in the world. Professionals –no matter what the industry in which they work, must consider ways to future proof their job and must expand the skillsets and adapt to new technology in the workplace in order to be thought to be a valuable asset and a viable candidate for upward mobility in the workplace.

Every year technology changes some positions, eliminates some positions and creates new positions. Among those being created –for example--are jobs such as CMT or Chief Marketing Technologist. This position is something akin to a marketer whose task it is to find the best technology available and share as well as teach that to co-workers. The Chief Digital Officer is a very new role that has already evolved several times. It is a role being embraced by many companies who have never required this type of employee prior to now.

In a world where new roles are constantly being invented and new skills are being necessary every day what are the skills that you should be learning? What is going to future proof your job?

The reality is that there is no good answer to that question. Depending on the industry that you’re in, it will vary from job to job, but even the most astute can’t give you a great answer to what will skills are going to be necessary to keep you relevant to your field.

Rather than give you a whole laundry list of skills that may help to keep you on top of your game, it’s far better for you to be able to show that you are willing. It’s better to prove to the rest of your company that you’re both willing and able to learn new things quickly and that you are adaptable.

It’s not always necessary to grab new skills and show them when you need them but you can prove thqt you can learn new skills readily and that you don’t mind adapting to new situations.

Being versatile is imperative in today’s career field. Jobs are not static things any longer. Every job is growing and changing rapidly and you must be willing to grow and change with them. If you can do that, you can future proof any job.
