IoT Insights, Practices, and Stories

Information is King......and the King is getting "Smarter" ??

Our global community depends on Internet-based devices every day of the week and twice on Sunday, be it for data collection, aggregation, or visualization.

As is so often addressed, this ever-expanding digital landscape presents persistent, sophisticated, and malicious threats to public and private sector organizations. But the sky is not always falling, and we can/should embrace the opportunities that the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem affords humanity.

On December 6th, 2022, the American Council for Technology and Industry Advisory Council celebrated its Emerging Technology Community of Interest and IoT Smart Infrastructure Working Group. The half-day event blended equal parts Government, Industry, and Academia thought leadership, in addition to spotlighting use cases having impact around the globe.

Highlights and Gratitude

Renee Wynn (CEO, RP Wynn Consulting LLC): Thank YOU for your continued passion to promote the Federal Government influence on modernization, innovation, and transformation. Your emphasis on privacy and security considerations associated with an IoT deployment truly resonated, especially as our critical infrastructure sectors depend more and more on the integration of operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT). PS - let me know when that "IoT Rake" is on the store shelves ??

Greg Bell (Chief Strategy Officer, Corelight ): Thank YOU for correlating the IoT influence on our nation's R&D agenda, especially regarding the secure communications, network connectivity, and collaboration spaces necessary for "moving the needle" toward impact. Your emphasis on the conversion of data into information, while respecting data integrity, provenance, and integrity, resonated, especially as we embrace a "zero trust" ecosystem underpinning our Government, Industry, and Academic sectors ????

Michael Dunaway, PhD (Associate Director for Innovation, National Institute of Standards and Technology ): Thank YOU for illustrating the complexity (and clarity) associated with a "Smart City" anatomy, especially regarding the trustworthiness of systems, infrastructure resilience, and standards-based solutions. Your emphasis on the need for scalability, interoperability, and measurability while at the same time respecting data bias, resonated, especially as we engage with international stakeholders to leverage IoT best practices and build global consensus. ????

Ray Falcione (Vice President and General Manager, Heavy.AI ): Thank YOU for distilling the data lifecycle and underscoring how advanced analytics can inform an organization's high-value opportunities (and risks) via visualization of big data. Your emphasis on supply chain and logistics operations resonated, and opened the "aperture of consideration" as organizations seek to make time-sensitive, high-impact decisions while utilizing data as a strategic asset ????

Andy Bochman (Senior Grid Strategist, Idaho National Laboratory ): Thank YOU for connecting-the-dots among critical infrastructure resilience, cyber-physical systems, and data center sustainability. Your focus on climate change mitigation, equity, and safety for any and all stakeholders resonated, especially as we transform our power grid to deliver clean, reliable, and distributed energy across the country and toward a zero-emission future ????

Barbara Cuthill, PhD (Deputy Program Manager for IoT, National Institute of Standards and Technology ): Thank YOU for promoting the principles of Open Government (transparency, collaboration, and participation) in the spirit of public-private partnership. Your emphasis on IoT policy development and how the IoT Advisory Board plans to deliver significant economic and societal benefits resonated, especially as our critical infrastructure investments target resilient, state-of-the-art innovations. Personally, I am super excited to work with you in CY 2023 ????

Ian Magazine (President and CEO, Airviz ); Thank YOU for spotlighting air quality monitoring and climate change mitigation, specifically via the power of storytelling and metrics-based exemplars. Your emphasis on our global air quality crisis was compelling and the use cases resonated, especially how IoT capabilities can enhance real-time monitoring, environmental sensing, computational analysis, and data correlation ????

Bryan Schromsky (Managing Partner, Verizon ): Thank YOU for expounding upon the promise of next-generation telecommunication services and the importance or "right-sizing" IoT technology investments based on business requirements. Your emphasis on the building blocks, e.g., bandwidth, coverage, latency, necessary for enhanced citizen experience and agency operations resonated, especially as our community leaders embrace "smart" technology insertion ????

Jerry Kurtze (Senior Global Director, JFrog ): Thank YOU for introducing the concept that "liquid software" is the future for DevSecOps and the IoT. Your emphasis on integrated, scalable, and secure software distribution to edge devices resonated, especially as real-time data streaming becomes mainstream and equally more "at-risk" to supply chain operations, control, and monitoring ????

Jim St. Pierre (Deputy Director, National Institute of Standards and Technology ): Thank YOU for wrapping a bow around our half-day of shared ingenuity, collective wisdom, and entrepreneurial spirit. Your pedigree is beyond impressive, and your influence across disparate stakeholder communities defines your character, humility, and authenticity. We will require your continued IoT vision moving going forward. Honored to know you, pal ????

Key Points and Takeaways

  • Information = Data with Context/Value
  • The IoT introduces risk AND opportunity
