Are IoT devices talk one to other?

I wonder how long respected authors will write these sentences: "Availability of high speed networks will lead to the rise of billions of new devices connected to the Internet, all talking with one another at incredibly fast speeds ......."
Can any smart watch, considered as an IoT talk to your garage opener, also considered as an IoT? So lets make it clear: Billions of IoT devices connected to the network are NOT talking one with another, and each IoT device is communicating within its Ecosystem. It is through the internet, and each device must have fairly strong cyber security included.
IoT devices communicate over internet with the designated cloud based service provider and this creates and Ecosystem which deliver operating and cost benefits. The Industrial IoT devices are different, they not talk over internet but the communicate within the cyber secured OT network. If and IIoT ecosystem operation is required, this will be initiated by the OT Control system via cyber secured link.

5 年Most of the IIoT devices will at max talk to Edge Servers/Gateways placed near the machines. Devices need not transmit their data to cloud especially for manufacturing plants. Smart city would be a different use case and should not be mixed up with IIoT even if they( devices & actuators similar to ones used in industries) are sending their status/ values to internet e.g water systems ww treatment plants, City water pumping and distribution and metering systems and Energy based/ associated applications.
