In the ever-evolving world of smart home technology, lighting control is a vital element for creating ambiance, enhancing security, and maximizing energy efficiency. I’m thrilled to share my recent project—an IoT-based RGB & CW Smart Downlights and Smart Switch solution built on the ESP32-C3 module. Designed for seamless integration with Alexa, and controllable through Android and iOS apps, this lighting system is all about flexibility, automation, and power efficiency.

Solution Overview:

Smart Switch connectivity with downlights

1. Smart Switch

The smart switch serves as the control hub for powering on and off the connected lights. Built on the ESP32-C3 module, it connects over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to enable remote and voice-activated control. Here’s how it works:

  • Remote Control: Through the mobile app (Android and iOS), users can remotely toggle the lights on or off. This can be done from anywhere as long as there's Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • Voice Control Integration: With Alexa integration, users can switch the lights on and off by simply giving a voice command. The ESP32-C3 processes the command received from Alexa and sends a signal to the switch, controlling the lights.
  • Scheduling: The smart switch can also be scheduled to automatically turn the lights on or off at specific times. This feature is especially helpful for energy savings and security purposes, as it allows lights to be automated when needed.

2. Smart RGB Downlight

The smart RGB downlight provides a full spectrum of colors, allowing users to set the lighting to match any mood or occasion. The ESP32-C3 module handles both the communication and control tasks, while the mobile app and Alexa provide intuitive interfaces for adjusting the color and brightness.

  • RGB Control: The app offers a color wheel or slider interface that lets users select any color from the RGB spectrum. The ESP32-C3 receives the selected color data and adjusts the LED drivers accordingly to display the exact color.
  • Dimming: Users can control the brightness of the RGB downlight through the app or voice commands. The ESP32-C3 modulates the current to the LEDs based on the brightness setting, achieving smooth dimming for the desired atmosphere.
  • Scene and Automation: Multiple downlights can be grouped together to create scenes or lighting presets. With scheduling, users can automate these scenes for specific times or activities, such as relaxation or movie nights.

3. Smart Cool/Warm Downlight

The smart cool/warm downlight offers dual white tones, allowing users to toggle between cool and warm lighting to create the perfect ambiance for different times of the day or activities. Here’s how it operates:

  • Color Temperature Adjustment: The app provides a slider or button option to toggle between cool white and warm white light. Cool white is generally used for focus or daytime activities, while warm white is ideal for relaxing evenings. The ESP32-C3 module processes the color temperature command and adjusts the LED driver settings to change the color tone.
  • Brightness Control: Similar to the RGB downlight, users can dim the cool/warm light. The ESP32-C3 sends precise control signals to modulate the light output, creating an adjustable light intensity.
  • Scheduling and Automation: The cool/warm downlight can be scheduled to switch between different color temperatures automatically. For example, it can be programmed to display cooler tones in the morning and warmer tones in the evening.


In this setup, the ESP32 module acts as a central controller for all connectivity, processing commands received via Wi-Fi or BLE and managing each lighting mode based on user preferences. Each component is optimized for power efficiency, using BLE for communication when appropriate, and ensuring smooth integration with Alexa and the mobile apps. This approach brings versatility, control, and energy savings to the entire smart lighting experience.
