ION #6 ?? Spotify made a big move, ?? The tech-driven chess drama, ? and what is next for Ethereum!
My weekly newsletter turned out to be not so weekly. You know how it goes, you start a new project and after a while, life kicks in and the project you started with all that enthusiasm gets kicked down the priority list. Well, today I wrote a new version to get back on track!
I searched the far corners of the internet again to find extraordinary stories, articles and tools that are pretty newsworthy but will not appear on your regular news feed.
Techcrunch reports that the chess world?is currently consumed by a drama as lurid and compelling, in its way, as the “Don’t Worry Darling” fracas. Involving implications of cheating at the highest levels of play, the feud between the world champion and an upstart challenger has prompted speculation on the existential threat to chess posed by an AI engine tiny enough to be concealed somewhere on — or in — the body.
Tesla has set the Optimus humanoid robot project as a priority. The company has assigned the Autopilot team to the Tesla Bot project, despite missing several timelines for delivering Full Self-Driving. Some customers have filed a class action lawsuit against Tesla over its claims about Autopilot and FSD. Tesla is expected to unveil its first working prototype of the Optimus robot at the company's AI Day 2 event at the end of this month.
After several moves that indicated this day was coming, Spotify has?officially added audiobooks?as yet another listening option in its app. Starting today, users in the US will have a dedicated section for the format that allows standalone purchases via a web link. At launch, the company says its library will contain over 300,000 titles. Spotify is clear this is "the first iteration" of audiobooks on its platform. The company plans to take notes and see what needs to be changed before expanding to other markets. It also wants to "innovate the format" so that listeners, authors and publishers benefit more from what the format can offer.?
We have been hearing about the Ethereum merge since 2017 now. Last week was a historic moment for crypto, particularly Ethereum. The Merge, the long-awaited switchover from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake, went off without a hitch, and Ethereum is now running on 99.5% less energy and with a 90% lower inflation rate. So now that it’s completed, it’s not unfair to wonder, “now what?” This was a major milestone in Ethereum’s development. However, it’s not done, and there are still some significant upgrades to come to turn it into the extensive, optimal blockchain the community imagines it can be.?This well-written piece from Nat Eliason uns you through The Surge, The Verge, The Purge, and The Splurge!
Dubbed “The Follower,” this project from Dries Depoorter tracks Instagrammers in the wild. In the process, it offers a glimpse at the terrifying capabilities of automated?surveillance. You might have seen some of the work of this Belgian artist before since he created quite some attention with a previous project where he taught an AI to automatically tag Belgian politicians when they use their phones on the daily live streams.

"TikTok is the new Google. Or so some people say. As TikTok grows, Google, in particular, has begun to describe the app as a whole new way of creating and consuming the internet and maybe an existential threat to its own search engine. Prabhakar Raghavan, the SVP of search at Google,?said in July?that “something like almost 40% of young people, when they are looking for a place for lunch, they don’t go to Google Maps or Search, they go to TikTok or Instagram.” More recently,?The New York Times?and others have talked to young internet users and found that, in fact, they’re turning to TikTok for more and more of what you might call Google-able things."

As an Electronic music enthusiast, I absolutely love getting lost on Every Noise at Once. This is an ongoing attempt at an algorithmically generated, readability-adjusted scatter plot of the musical genre space, based on data tracked and analysed for 5,925 genre-shaped distinctions by Spotify. The calibration is fuzzy, but in general, down is more organic, up is more mechanical and electric; the left is denser and more atmospheric, and right is spikier and bouncier. Check it out and discover all about Bosnian Dub Techno or discover that you actually love Swedish Lounge Core.
That's it for this week's episode of the?In Other Newsletter.?As always, feel free to reply to the post or leave some feedback via PM if you want to chat about it.
