IOGP Safety directorate - November reflections
Colleagues,
WOW, time really does fly.
On the home front, a visit to Charles Dickens museum in Doughty Street, where he lived with his young family. Not the pomp and circumstance you usually see in UK historical sites, more a look into his life during the period when he wrote the Pickwick Papers and Oliver Twist. Dickens forms part of the UK cultural fabric, topical now we get closer to Xmas.
You will have seen my “special edition” reflections earlier in the month. The Safety Collaboration Forum 2022 lingers. It was a day with impact for very senior leaders, and I look forward to the continuation. I include the LinkedIn post here for those who did not yet have a chance to check it out. Please like, comment and repost. It is intended to help set a new leadership tone, your action will amplify, it matters.
Whilst in US, quick detour to IADC’s AGM in New Orleans. Old friends met, new friends made. I particularly enjoyed the conversations with representatives from the IADC student chapter at LSU.
Was delighted to join our Health Committee meeting in Muscat. Fantastic few days hosted by Dr Sulaiman of Petroleum Development Oman, PDO. On the last day, an industry workshop, with great attendance and key contributions from PDO,?OPAL (Omani sister trade association) and others. My most inspirational take away were the live discussions around workers rights and welfare. In particular, the presentation from North Oil Company (Qatar) on the legislative changes implemented there, was impressive. Huge progress!?
During the same week, Marinara facilitated the Process Safety Sub Committee meetings in Paris, hosted by TotalEnergies. Their first f2f meeting in almost 3 years and seeing colleagues live makes a difference. Solid progress as always. My personal priority is implementation of the Process Safety Fundamentals, and the Task Force is on it. Also, the updated 456 will be ready for release in the new year.
Again same week, Diana provided the engine during the virtual Wells Expert Committee meeting. Great participation. People show up for both the sharing workshop and the more regular agenda. Direction of travel towards the left hand side of the well control bow tie remains.
Our Land Transport Sub Committee had a workshop in Houston and repeated in London yesterday. Topics mainly on alignment on future plans. 365 needs an update and also new topics are on the table.
During the IOGP members congress/EGM, I particularly liked Lord Browne’s address, meeting several valued colleagues and -of course- the dinner and tour of the Harry Potter studios. Sadly, it was Fuzzy’s last effort as IOGP chair. He will be missed but am excited that Kim McHugh has stepped up to replace him. A “driller” - at last!
At the weekend, I attended the 30 year anniversary celebrations of the International Well Control Forum, IWCF, in Montrose, Scotland. They have made a massive difference in well control training, testing and accreditation over their history and from what I can see, both purpose and energy remains. It was great to meet old friends and make some new ones too. Thank you for the invite Zdenek!
Good inputs to “Consedo Columbia Seguridas” CCS in Columbia, on Helicopter safety and a more general IOGP session the following day. They were impressed with our safety data and had many questions related to Energy Transition imperatives. Luckily, several related guidelines had just been published.
Small side show as a “voiceover artist” for bp’s Norwegian translation of their key LSR video. It was a nice thought to feel useful towards those more in harms way than myself. Don’t worry, it does not signal a shift in future career aspirations. Still trying to figure out who volunteered me!
As always, several publications. Wanted to especially mention the “Learning From Normal Work” document which will help reset our learning focus. Post | Feed | LinkedIn
We have concluded the work on the “Fatalities and Permanent Impairments”, FPI, definition.
Danny refreshed our website. Some new content in the safety section, particularly around HP principles and also the FPI info note. Check it out: Safety | IOGP
Last, of course, the 2022 appraisal cycle is underway. Very happy that we have a new tool that will aid the process, and enable better focus on people development than in the past.
On November history, the 22-25th of Nov 1983, The World Health Organization held its first meeting to assess the global AIDS situation and began surveillance. Whilst there is still no cure, much has been achieved, enabling many of those infected to live long and healthy lives. At the end of 2021, it is estimated that 38,4 mln people live with the HIV infection, some 2/3rd of which in the African region.
Tomorrow, the 1st of Dec, will be the 34th time the world observes World AIDS day.
Too many thanks to mention. Onwards and upwards to a needed Festive Season break!
Kind regards
Olav
