Inviting Children to Experience Hotel Operations

In the ever-evolving world of hospitality, initiatives that bring families closer to the essence of hotel operations stand out as truly inspiring. One such initiative that has always captured my admiration is inviting staff members' children to participate in hotel activities. These experiences are not only enjoyable for the children but also provide a fascinating glimpse into the backstage workings of a hotel—a world full of creativity, collaboration, and care.

A Backstage Pass to Hospitality

Hotels are complex ecosystems where every department contributes to creating memorable guest experiences. By involving children in thoughtfully designed activities, we give them the unique opportunity to learn about this vibrant industry in a fun and interactive way. These initiatives can spark curiosity and even ignite a passion for hospitality in future generations.

Take, for example, a project I fondly recall involving my daughter and her brother. Several years ago, they participated in the making of a promotional film for a luxury hotel in Brussels. The film showcased the life of a family enjoying a hotel stay and exploring the city. Beyond their roles as young actors, they engaged in various hotel activities during the project, including an unforgettable experience in the hotel’s pastry shop. It was not only a delightful experience for them but also an educational one, giving them a sense of the craftsmanship and teamwork involved in creating something special for guests.

From housekeeping to culinary arts, there are countless areas within a hotel where children can have enriching experiences:

1. Pastry and Culinary Workshops: Guided by the hotel’s talented chefs, children can learn to decorate cakes, bake cookies, or create simple dishes. These workshops combine fun with practical skills and leave lasting memories.

2. Housekeeping Adventures: Activities such as bed-making competitions or towel-folding demonstrations can be both entertaining and eye-opening, showing children the effort that goes into ensuring a guest’s comfort.

3. Front Desk Engagements: With guidance, children can learn about guest check-in processes or try their hand at welcoming guests, instilling a sense of confidence and communication skills.

4. Event Planning Insights: Setting up a mock event or assisting with simple decorations can give children a taste of creativity and logistics.

5. Behind-the-Scenes Tours: From engineering rooms to laundry services, behind-the-scenes tours offer a glimpse into the hidden yet essential parts of hotel operations.

6. Cultural Activities: Hotels can organize storytelling sessions, local craft workshops, or city tours that connect children to the destination’s heritage while highlighting the role of hospitality in bringing cultures together.

A true Step Beyond Digital

In today’s digital-first world, where children spend a significant portion of their time on screens, such hands-on initiatives are invaluable. They provide a chance for kids to step away from their devices and engage in real-world, tactile experiences that foster creativity, teamwork, and a sense of accomplishment. These activities ground them in the values of hard work, attention to detail, and the joy of service—qualities that are integral to hospitality.

A Call to Hospitality Leaders

Leaders in the hospitality industry who invest in these kinds of initiatives demonstrate forward-thinking and a commitment to nurturing future generations. By opening the doors of our hotels to children, we not only enrich their lives but also strengthen the bonds within our teams and showcase the heart of hospitality.

To my peers in the industry: let us take this extra step to inspire and educate the younger generation. After all, these small gestures can create lasting impressions and perhaps even shape the hospitality leaders of tomorrow. Let’s continue to imagine and implement activities that bring families together, celebrate the art of hospitality, and keep the spirit of learning alive.

In closing, when my daughter and her brother, much younger then, took part in that film project, they found themselves immersed in the world of luxury hospitality. It was an experience that combined learning with fun in the most heartwarming way.

Here’s to more of such initiatives and the endless possibilities they bring!
