An Invitation for You...

This is the first issue of my new monthly newsletter.

Knowledge makes you safer. When it comes to keeping your hard-earned savings safe,?it pays to be informed.

Why it matters: I pay attention to developments and summarize them once a month in this newsletter, so you can stay up to date in just a couple of minutes.

It doesn’t take much to be informed. Each issue, I’ll give you just enough information so you can have a general sense of what the financial markets have been doing.

My hope is that this newsletter will be your monthly reminder to think about your savings and investments. Without such reminders, many people go years without thinking about the money they worked so hard to save.

By the numbers: Here’s what key indices did in the month of September 2023.

• S&P 500: down 4.9% to 4,288.15
• Nasdaq Composite: down 5.8% to 13,219.32
• Dow Jones: down 3.5% to 33,507.76
• 10 Year Treasury yield: 4.58%
• 12 Month Treasury yield: 5.47%

A bit of perspective: According to NPR’s Planet Money, “The month of September has been, on average, the worst month for the stock market going back more than a century. And September 2023 appears to be no exception.”

• One year ago, The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed below 29,000 after losing 8.8% in the month of September. A year later—even after a down month—it’s at 33,507.76.

The bottom line: It’s incredibly difficult to time the markets. The best strategy is to have a diversified portfolio and make prudent long-term investments.
