Invitation to join my PhD defence

It is my pleasure to invite you for the public defence of my PhD dissertation on Thursday 19 September 2024 at 14:45 in the prof.dr. G. Berkhoff-Zaal in the Waaier building at the University of Twente. The layman talk will take place prior the defence at 14:30 and afterwards there will be a reception. You can attend the event on campus and via a livestream . Please RSVP if you like to join the event on campus via this Google Form . In this article, I introduce the PhD research and highlights of the PhD dissertation.

Intelligence amplification

The past two years I conducted research about the topic intelligence amplification under the supervision of Maria Iacob , Marten J. van Sinderen , Yoshimasa Masuda and Koray Karaca. I started working on this topic during the Professional Doctorate in Engineering trajectory, where I designed and implemented an Industry Platform for Data-driven Logistics in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises . Building upon this industrial and experimental research, I decided to pursue a PhD in the field of Information Systems and continue working on this exciting and highly relevant topic by conducting fundamental research in the context of current development programs Society 5.0 and Industry 5.0 . The past two years were an intense journey and a great learning experience. I am looking forward to present and defend my PhD dissertation. The graduation committee consists of Maya Daneva , Jos van Hillegersberg , Dimka Karastoyanova , and Sa?d Assar . My paranymphs are Elisa Ostet and Bernard Diphooren .

Setting the scene

Human-centered design and artificial intelligence, amongst other emerging technologies, are positioned as the cornerstones to realise the future visions of the so-called super-smart information society in Society 5.0 and human-centric cyber physical systems in Industry 5.0. In this context, intelligence amplification is a very relevant and current topic. However, the design of applications to amplify human intelligence is a non-trivial task. Design knowledge lies scattered across disciplines and literature. More specifically, there is no readily available knowledge base to conduct design science research. Therefore, the search for relevant design knowledge is inefficient. Moreover, this hinders reuse and cumulative development of design knowledge. In my PhD dissertation, I propose a novel Design Science Research Knowledge Base for Intelligence Amplification.

Highlights of the PhD dissertation

First, I conducted an interdisciplinary systematic literature review to identify, categorise and harmonise knowledge regarding intelligence amplification from 176 studies. Based on the results, I consolidated the various definitions and disciplinary viewpoints in a new definition to include the role and importance of context, defining intelligence amplification as “the effective use of IT to augment human intelligence in a given context”.

Second, I developed a theoretical framework for design science research knowledge bases using established theories, frameworks, methodologies, and relevant knowledge from the field of Information Systems. This framework also incorporates philosophical justification knowledge to harmonise different (and possibly conflicting) positions regarding ontology and epistemology and pragmatic justification knowledge to integrate the perspectives of stakeholders.

Third, I propose an interactive knowledge base system to make knowledge available for (re)use and cumulative development in design science research projects. Therefore, I designed a domain reference ontology for design science research knowledge bases and developed an operational ontology for computer-based interpretation. The interactive knowledge base system was implemented using the results of the literature review to demonstrate its capability of answering knowledge questions regarding intelligence amplification. Additionally, the use for cumulative development of design knowledge was demonstrated by analysing and improving existing design theories for intelligence amplification.

Fourth, I developed a practical design canvas, design method, and toolbox to support professionals and practitioners to design, build, implement, and evaluate intelligence amplification applications. The design canvas was developed and evaluated in design workshops involving 66 professionals and practitioners from different domains in the Netherlands and Japan. The design method and supporting toolbox were co-developed and evaluated in a community of practice involving use cases of 27 organisations in the context of Industry 5.0. The design canvas was also incorporated in the adaptive integrated digital architecture framework and related design thinking approach. This approach was verified by 20 professionals and practitioners and evaluated in a multiple use case analysis of an AI hospital in the context of Society 5.0. Three design principles were derived using abstraction, learning, and accumulation of design knowledge: joint inquiry, collaborative design inquiry, and measurement of intelligence amplification. The results and findings were consolidated in a new theory for the design and action of human-centric intelligence amplification applications in the context of Society 5.0 and Industry 5.0.

Taken together, my PhD dissertation provides a foundation for the cumulative development of design knowledge related to intelligence amplification and applications that contribute to the realisation of Society 5.0 and Industry 5.0.
