It was relatively cool winter morning outside but a rather hot and anxious one for this manager, who is till now a performer in one of the top service provider companies. The apparent reason was 'adjusting' to something which is not his usual style and neither does he likes to. And in next few months, he was packed off with lots of 'adjustments' on the name of 'agility' and by next winter he served his notice period !!
Seems so funny, or irrelevant? but let us go little deeper in the case. Mr. Bravo, is one of the performing managers and relatively senior in the organization. He has been in the system past around 8 years, during which he got two promotions and earned him handsome rewards like few international trips, dinners and lunches with CEO, participation in strategic meetings, official mouth piece at times for some strategic executions and bunch of certificates. In short, he was enjoying all the lime light he deserves. In the process however, one invisible but constant thing has happened, and that was 'thickening' of his ego.
And as always happen when we are over drunk, we lose control ! This Mr Bravo was swiftly losing out on the control and started reacting at different platforms on the name of "Ideology difference" between him and the organization ( actually his boss !!!). Soon his boss started getting those "News" from his 'private reporters' who were junior to Mr Bravo and were reporting to Bravo with skip level reporting to boss ! And as they says, Boss is always right ! He started treating Mr Bravo with less empathy and less emotions and the relationship soon turned into 'cold war'.
Mr Bravo started now openly to react and resist any thing that was coming from 'Top'. His boss was smart enough and has won the heart of his bosses. Finally boss and bosses all together decided to dig a grave for this Mr Bravo, once high performing, and still extremely talented senior manager in the organization. All happened systematically and in about 12 months of time.
The quick check therefore to know when the final bell will ring, we must notice following behaviour changes in ourselves :
1. After every high performing month/year are we getting thicker in our ego ?
2. Have we started treating ourselves as the 'Inseparable'?
3. Are we living in fool's paradise, by falsely believing that boss's boss and his boss and his boss and top boss are all so close to me and hence nothing is going to happen?!
If answer of any one of the above questions is YES, than start counting months, and if answer of all three comes in YES than start counting Days !
The respite for those who are right now counting ! There are a few ways to delay the death or completely stop it.
Do try out following suggestions.
1. Along with you daily Gym work out, also do 'Emotional workout' with you boss once in a month and share your feelings openly to him. (Instead of sharing it to his spy reporters !)
2. Start believing that performance is a daily task and hence you can't count yesterday as today. Do it daily.
3. Shed that extra kilos of ego by developing firm belief that : "No individual is greater than the organization"
Have a safe landing !
