AN INVISIBLE FORCE: CELEBRATING AN ENDURING INDUSTRY ON WORLD MARITIME DAY
Abdulkareem Al Masabi
CEO ADNOC L&S | Chairman AW Shipping I Chairman Emirates Shipping Association
Every day, a silent yet immensely powerful force sets in motion, connecting nations, industries, and communities across the globe. This force is the maritime industry, a beacon of resilience, innovation, and unwavering dedication to progress. As we celebrate World Maritime Day, and as a former seafarer, I am privileged to shed light on how this sector serves as an invisible yet indispensable cornerstone of our interconnected world. From the bustling ports of Abu Dhabi, where ADNOC L&S is a strategic partner, to the far reaches of the oceans where our vessels sail, the maritime industry stands as a testament to human ingenuity, perseverance, and a critical pathway toward a prosperous future for all.
In the past year alone, the maritime industry facilitated the transportation of over 11 billion tons of goods across the world's oceans. This staggering figure represents a lifeline for countries and industries, ensuring the availability of resources, the delivery of critical supplies, and the growth of international trade. In perspective, approximately 80% of global trade by volume and 70% by value is carried by ships. These maritime arteries are the conduits through which raw materials, energy resources, and finished products flow, driving economies and shaping our modern way of life.
On the other hand, oceans generate 50 percent of the oxygen we need,?absorb 25 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions,?and capture 90 percent of the excess heat generated by these emissions. This is precisely why, amidst a global climate change movement, the emphasis on protecting our oceans has never been greater. And so, in today's maritime industry, we stand at a crossroads, but should not have to choose between progress and the planet.
This sector, vital to global commerce, has traditionally displayed unparalleled resilience, weathering storms of all sorts. Yet, in an era where the health of our planet is paramount, decarbonization of shipping emerges as a critical imperative. We need to embrace transformation across all aspects of our operations – on land and at sea.
