The Invisible Barrier to True Innovation: The Misconception of Traditional Credentials

Do you ever wonder why, despite our best efforts and investments, true innovation seems elusive? These young entities often bring disruptive and complex technologies that can reshape the status quo. On the other hand, I aid corporate executives in technology scouting and refining their innovation processes, ensuring they make the most significant impact possible.?

While walking this tightrope, I've realized a common roadblock we often overlook: our unyielding adherence to traditional credentials. Recently, as I delved into potential collaborations and analyzed job postings in the realm of innovation, a recurring theme became evident. Many companies continue to place undue emphasis on pieces of paper—degrees, PhDs, certifications—that often have little correlation with the actual job or the genuine competence of a candidate.

Isn't it perplexing that we often attribute higher credibility to someone who has spent decades within a singular vertical, armed with all the certifications, rather than someone with an eclectic resume? A person who has jumped across sectors, geographies, and diverse experiences, manifesting innovation across various industries, but perhaps lacks those sought-after titles.

In the startup world, there's a saying that resonates deeply with me: you learn more from a founder who's attempted and failed to create five businesses than from one who's launched a single venture that hit jackpot. Why? Because the latter knows only one path to success. Perhaps the stars aligned for them on their first attempt. In contrast, the former has uncovered hundreds of different pitfalls and challenges. They know the myriad ways things can go south and have the versatility to adapt and pivot.

The crux of innovation, especially within corporates, doesn't solely lie in specialized expertise. Real innovation stems from diverse experiences, from those who've traversed various fields, faced numerous challenges, and gleaned insights from every endeavor.

In my view, the individuals most equipped to spearhead groundbreaking projects are not those rooted in a singular vertical but those who've embraced a kaleidoscope of experiences.
