Be Invictus and Keep Walking

Last July, I embarked on a three-day trek to Tunganath, Uttarakhand. With immense enthusiasm, I resumed trekking after a one-year hiatus since relocating from Bangalore to Gurgaon. During this time, I had been focusing on my new role and enjoying short cycling rides. Excited and eager, I was the first among a much younger group to reach the top. Feeling accomplished with this small victory, I decided to undertake more adventurous treks in the coming months. However, just three days later, upon returning from the trek, I slipped from the stairs and broke my left kneecap. Rushed to the hospital, I underwent surgery to mend the broken kneecap with wires. With 17 stitches externally and wired stitched kneecap, I was confined to a room for the next 2 months under supervision. I was advised not to move without support or put any pressure on my left leg. Subsequently, the physiotherapy started and managed to walk with walker support.

Almost seven months since that incident, I have made significant progress in recovery, and it continues to date. I'd like to share some of my experiences and lessons learned during the course of my recovery:

  • More than the physical pain, it was the monotony of being confined to a room and relying entirely for support at home that weighed heavily on me. Physically bedridden, my mind and enthusiasm remained intact, eager to venture out at the earliest opportunity, though this was neither possible nor permitted. I endeavoured to attend to office work as much as possible, but at times, medication or pain hindered my productivity in the initial months. Healing takes time, and it's a gradual process. Rebuilding muscles requires consistent effort, especially when starting from scratch post-recovery. My most profound realization - the freedom to eat, walk, and breathe independently is one of life's greatest gifts.
  • Despite feeling disappointed and taken aback by the timing and nature of the incident, I recognized it as an opportunity to rebuild my health, both mentally and physically. I committed to daily exercise and began taking short cycling rides within my society. Just a few months ago, even walking a few steps or running for 20 meters seemed an insurmountable challenge. Yet, through daily perseverance, a positive outlook, and the desire to trek once more, I've made remarkable strides in regaining functionality. I firmly believe that a “Positive attitude has no substitute”. Now, I walk daily for as long as possible (approximately 3-5 kms), exercise during office breaks/ long office meetings, and no longer dwell on the setback. While I may have temporarily paused certain activities, I am determined to achieve even more with my newfound strength.
  • Another lesson learned during this period of limitation is the importance of accepting circumstances and prioritizing self-care. While we may devise elaborate plans for success, outcomes often deviate from our expectations; setbacks occur, conditions may not align in our favour, and events may unfold beyond our control. Despite adversity, we must strive to do our best in all situations, never neglecting our health in the process.
  • A supportive environment, both at home and at work, proved invaluable during this challenging time. I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of my family, friends, and colleagues throughout my recovery. Extremely proud of my team which delivered on my commitments, faced and overcame numerous challenges.

Lastly, I continue to draw inspiration from my favorite poem "Invictus”, written by “William Ernest Henley” which motivates me to persevere through adversity and chaos, urging me to Keep Walking. I hope to schedule my next trek in the second half of 2024 (subject to approvals :-)) .
