Investor Scrutiny Shifts Away From Fossil Fuels

Most investors speaking at last week's New York?Climate Week?have switched their attention away from fossil fuels. A few have divested, some have become more selective, and many are intensifying engagement with oil and gas companies. But the majority considers that the principle of phasing out fossil fuels is now established and is instead focusing on decarbonizing and electrifying the economy. The challenges demanding attention there are numerous — around permitting, intermittency management, decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors and rerisking projects in emerging countries. Yet investment opportunities are plentiful and returns attractive.
