PART I – Functions of Investor Relations

When working within a public listed company as critical administrative support to the executive team, Executive Assistants are often responsible for assisting in driving the administration support to achieve the objectives and outcomes the Board wishes to deliver as part of their investor relations strategy.

Investor relations is dependent on the approach of the CEO, CFO and senior management. It takes into account the type of business – is it a large resource company or a small start-up company?

Below we share some insights and tips on some of the general functions of the investor relations scope of work:

Communications – provide key messaging to the market which can be channeled through road shows, investor 1:1 meetings, investor conferences, annual reporting and AGM’s.

Crisis management – from time to time critical strategies are required in constructing together crisis management messaging.

Market Research – profiling the company shareholder base and segments. It is important to have an understanding of who the key shareholders are.

Shareholder Targeting – gathering market intelligence on trends that can affect the company.

Relationship Building – introduce and strengthen relationships with brokers, analysts and investors.

Inbound Communication – provide the Company with market analysis on competitors, monitor and advise on market/consensus.

Reporting – preparation of announcements and media communications to achieve investor engagement.

These only touch on a few of the key tasks undertaken in the investor relations program and outlines a few areas where you may be required to provide a critical resource providing administrative support to the IR and/or executive team.
