Investing in legal innovation

Helping in-house legal and law firms navigate the world of legal transformation
Welcome to the 5th edition of The Legal Transformation 5. If you’re new to this monthly newsletter the format is 5 things of interest from the world of legal transformation, loosely curated around a theme. ?
This month the theme is 'investment' - specifically investment in legal technology and?change & transformation programmes.?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I imagine the first thing you thought about when I said investment was £££££. Dosh, dough, bucks, the folding stuff – the capital you need to invest in legal innovation. While some of the content I share below is ultimately about getting the financial investment you need,?it’s also about investment in terms of time and people.?
My first Legal Transformation 5 this month is a good example of the importance of the latter – investing in people so they support your transformation programmes. Here goes...?
Short read?
Getting support from the people who are most impacted by the implementation of a new process or the deployment of a legal tech solution, is vital for the success of any transformation project. But often these important stakeholders are overlooked in the rush to get agreement, and investment, from more senior stakeholders.?
As this article explains, even if the change is designed to make people’s lives easier, they need to be part of the transformation journey?to maximise adoption.?
If you’re exploring new ways of working, or about to roll out a legal tech solution, these tips will help you ensure key stakeholders are engaged from the start.?
Short read?
Continuing this thread, here’s an article from the team at Linklaters on The Artificial Lawyer blog that provides more advice on getting buy in.?
As they suggest,?looking for early wins is a sure-fire way of getting support for future projects. Instead of picking a massive project that will take months and potentially cause significant disruption, identify a simple process or pain point that can be easily resolved with automation and get that right first. ?
Then when you come to tackling the bigger transformation projects you’ll meet with less resistance and more enthusiasm for adopting new ways of working.?
Survey?
Gartner’s survey of legal leaders predicts that by 2025 12% of the total legal department budget will be spent on legal technology. Factors that are driving this investment include the?‘forced’ adoption of digital technology during 2020 – 2021 to cope with Covid-19 and remote working and a trend towards recruiting more non-lawyer staff.?

Legal departments have seen the benefits of modern workplace technology and now want tools that help them with specific legal work activities. They also need solutions that empower non-lawyer staff to get jobs done without the input of time poor lawyers.?
Podcast?
I came across this series of podcasts recently and considered sharing an episode about legal tech with you. However, there are so many insightful podcasts here that I thought I would share them all.?
If you want to know why they’re part of this month’s theme, put them under the ‘investment in personal development’ category!?
Here you’ll find six series with six episodes each under the banners of Empathy, Success, Law 2.0, Beyond Law (you’ll find Colin Levy 's episode on legal tech here, Skills lawyers need and Culture.?
I highly recommend.?
Infographic?

Finally, as it’s Halloween today I thought you might find this infographic from Sarah OUIS entertaining and useful. As well as being a legal design expert Sarah helps lawyer’s raise their professional profile on platforms like LinkedIn. Below she shares how you can leverage what’s trending in your area of interest and repurpose content to get noticed.?
Follow Sarah Ouis for more social media visualisations and legal design advice.?
