Investing in Green Hydrogen: Key to Energy Transition

It's quite interesting to notice that for a colorless gas, hydrogen gets referred to in very colorful terms.

Speaking about the hero of the hour, Green Hydrogen, we imply hydrogen that has been procured without producing pollutant emissions, i.e. sustainable hydrogen. Green hydrogen is obtained through a procedure of electrolysis powered by renewable sources of energy such as wind or solar. Electrolysis includes wielding an electrical current to break down the water molecule into oxygen and hydrogen by electrodes.

On India’s 75th? Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged the takeoff of a National Hydrogen Mission and declared the goal of developing India as a global hub for the manufacturing of hydrogen and fuel cell technology across the value chain.?

Major activities envisaged under the mission include creating volumes and infrastructure; demonstrations in niche applications including transport and industry; goal-oriented research & development; and establishing a robust framework for standards and regulations for hydrogen technologies.

The Government will also facilitate demand creation in specific areas, including mandates for the use of green hydrogen in the industry (fertilizer, steel, petrochemicals, etc.)

As a result, the industry has already begun making the switch to green hydrogen. The companies that are leading the green hydrogen mission are:

  • Reliance plans to become a net carbon-zero firm by 2035.
  • GAIL plans to build India's largest green hydrogen plant as it looks to supplement.
  • NTPC plans to produce green hydrogen on a commercial scale.
  • Indian Oil plans to build a green hydrogen plant at its Mathura refinery in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Larsen and Toubro declared that it would set up a green hydrogen plant at its Hazira complex, which is scheduled to be completed this financial year.

While many other companies focus on becoming sustainable, green hydrogen is going to be an essential tool for it.?

According to IEA, the method of obtaining green hydrogen would save the 830 million tonnes of CO2 that are emitted annually when this gas is produced using fossil fuels.?

Ultimately, whether or not green hydrogen achieves its promise and potential banks on how the industry and the government functionaries are willing to pave the road strategically for sustainable development.
