Investing in genomics skills and knowledge matters: here's why!

As a busy researcher, clinician, or healthcare worker, finding time to invest in professional education can be a challenge. Financial barriers can also prevent you from accessing career-enhancing conferences or training courses.

However, these activities are crucial for career development. Training and knowledge sharing environments provide opportunities for discovery, network building, and progression.

Accessing the latest genomics knowledge and techniques can also offer extended benefits to your laboratory or institution.

If you are considering any form of career?development but struggling to justify the time or investment, read our article discussing the importance of professional education.

Spotlight: Uniting against antimicrobial resistance!

In a world where antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a huge threat to global health, the need to build capacity in genomics skills and knowledge for surveillance has reached a critical juncture.

The time has come for scientists working across? human, animal, and environmental health sectors to collaborate, to facilitate the global acceleration of genomics in AMR.

Creating spaces for these scientists to exchange knowledge, form new ideas, and learn how to translate data insights into effective decision making is essential for promoting positive public health outcomes.

To address this, Wellcome Connecting Science and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, South Africa, co-organised the first symposium to foster?discussion on the implementation of genomics into AMR surveillance work across Africa, through the lens of One Health.

Immunology through the lens of human biology

Our brand new conference focusing on Human Immunology - Genes and Environment, will provide valuable insights on how genomics-led human studies are revolutionising the field of immunology research.

In a short article, some of our conference speakers share their thoughts on how human immune responses are influencing the future of vaccine development.

A must-read for anyone who wants to learn more about how attending our conference could benefit their own work.

Lessons from the pandemic: training in infectious disease surveillance

Four years ago, WHO declared a global COVID-19 pandemic. This pandemic shone a spotlight on the value of genomics in infectious disease surveillance to inform public-health decisions. For us, it was the springboard for COG-Train, a pioneering initiative for building global capacity in genomics, in partnership with the COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK) Consortium.

Free online courses, developed as part of the COG-Train initiative, are available to complete within the FutureLearn platform until the end of May 2024.

Resources and materials are permanently available on GitHub, for free.
