Investing in Change
As CFO, I often talk about change, financially speaking of course. However, as today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the States, I wanted to briefly discuss a different kind of change.
Last week, the United States Mint announced that the beloved author and activist Maya Angelou will be the first black woman featured on a quarter in the United States. While we lost her in 2014, the words she shared in her poems, bestselling books, and even in a Presidential inauguration, will continue to inspire people for generations to come.
It may not seem like much, but I believe having her quarter in our pockets will remind us how she and many others have invested in changing our future for the better.
As Martin Luther King, Jr. said in his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, “The beauty of genuine brotherhood and peace is more precious than diamonds or silver or gold.”
In this case, perhaps it’s as precious as a quarter.
