Investigations and Interpreters
As an interviewer, you may encounter situations where the person(s) you plan to interview?will require an interpreter because they do not speak English very well, have difficulty understanding or are hearing impaired.?If you do, here are some tips that will prove helpful:
?·??????Inform the interpreter of your role, the circumstances and what you are trying to accomplish.
?·??????Advise the interpreter of the need for specific translation - i.e. use the choice of words or language the interviewee used.
?·??????Advise the interpreter of potential problems -?i.e. sensitivity of information or potential for emotions.
?·??????Introduce interviewee to interpreter.
?·??????Stay in control of the interview - be careful not to let the interpreter take over.
?·??????Face and speak to the interviewee, not the interpreter.
?Language Interpreters
?·??????Ensure the language interpreter speaks the correct dialect, is of similar class as the witness, appropriate gender and has a good grasp of both languages and cultures.
?·??????Speak slowly, clearly and avoid the use of jargon and slang.
?·??????Speak in short blocks to allow the translator to translate.
?·??????Try not to speak at length to the interpreter in English.?This may be perceived as rude or suspicious.
?·??????Advise the interpreter not to speak at length with the interviewee as some of the details may not be passed along.

?·??????Speak at your normal speed.
?·??????Positioning of he “signer” ?is important.?Check with the “signer” and the impaired person about the seating arrangements.
?·??????In group situations it is important the people speak one at a time.
?·??????Remember:???The interpreter is an objective party to the communication.?Do not ask their opinion or try to include them in your discussions.
?·??????Be Patient.?Using an interpreter can take two to three times longer than a regular interview.
?Consider summarizing the oral interview into a written statement and have the witness and interpreter sign and date the statement along with the investigator.
