We started talking to you yesterday about what it is that we think needs to happen so that you see your business survive and even thrive in this upcoming severe global recession we are about to experience.
We’re well aware that a recession is the last thing you want to think of. After all no matter who you are, 2020 has been THE hardest and strangest year yet, but it’s not avoidable. What is avoidable, is the damage. And to avoid it, the answer is once more, focusing on our people. We speak to tens of leaders in various industries and it seems the reactions are varied and based on the advice they listen to and their courage and maturity in understanding the difference between today’s world of ultra-fast technology and consumer expectation versus what reality was around us during the other recessions we have seen.
There will be advice out there, suggesting the way to navigate this is to cut cost. Advice that may have worked 10-15 years ago. We think that on the contrary, the answer is investment. Investing in empowering technology and solid, healthy teams. That the world has completely changed and no economic model that ignores this new reality of technology can apply, so using strategies that were suggested in the last few economic downturns, is bankrupt.
In this video, we discuss why we think that investing smartly is cheaper than choosing not to. Whom we speak to and how we know they will be winning. What happens if we lose people. What happens if worse still, they stay and they are, despite their best intentions, not up to par. (Whether you measure that in hours and presence or results - which should hereon out be the norm, BTW!)
No strategy play, no reorg magic and no cost-cutting shortcut can replace the people work and keep us safe. You won't come out of this recession if you still have either any tech debt or any "human debt" brushed under the carpet.
If you’re an enterprise leader reading this, think deeply of the new reality that we are in and protect your best value by doubling down on investing in it. If you are a team leader ask for the help you need to continue focusing on your teams and demand the technology you need. If you’re a team member, do the work equivalent of “dance like no one’s watching” during the recession and obstinately bring your best fearless self in.
Hard as it may be.
No matter who you are, don’t hold back, be open and daring, don’t impression manage, don’t stop asking for what you need and deserve to grow and keep being safe and productive.
