Historical facts/ How Grand Baie has Become the Tourist Capital of Mauritius:
(4) In the 17th century the Dutch used to call Grand Baie 'De Bogt Zonder Eynt', which meant the 'Bay Without End'. Today it appears as though it's the development – not the bay – that's without end. Grand Baie has all the vices and virtues of beach resorts the world over. The virtues include good accommodation, bars and restaurants, while the vices can be found in water frontages consumed by concrete and touts, although the latter, in true Mauritian style, nudge rather than push. To escape the downtown scene, head for charming and quiet Pointe aux Canonniers.
Grand Baie owes its popularity to its vivacity during the day and night. It offers facilities for safe swimming, windsurfing and water skiing. Grand Baie serves as starting point for fishing trips and boat trips to the islets north of Mauritius: The Gunners Coin, Flat Island, Round Island and Snake Island.

Grand Baie Beach is located in the town of Grand Baie, in the north part of Mauritius. This is one of the many beaches of Mauritius situated in the Rivière du Rempart district.
Grand Baie Beach is also known as Grand Bay Beach.
The pearl of the north, the party beach, the shortest beach in Mauritius, the most popular beach in Mauritius – and many other things have been said about Grand Baie Beach. Some of them are true, some of them are not.
It is true that the beach at Grand Baie, or in English; Grand Bay, belong to one of the shorter beaches in Mauritius, but definitely not the shortest. It is probably also true that it belongs to one of the more popular beaches on the island. Definitely not because of its size, length or clear waters, because it is neither large nor long, and there is better water quality to be found elsewhere.
You wouldn’t really go to Grand Baie Beach for a dip, although of course you can. Many visitors do take a swim, but most visitors are here for other reasons.
There is an abundance of tour operators, tourist shops and accommodations of various standards in the area, and one might argue that the town is at times a bit too touristy, especially during the high season. With public spaces such as Dodo Square and Sunset Boulevard, it is difficult not to see the touristic thinking behind it all, but there is a good word to describe the positive side of it all, and that word is competition.
Want to go Big Game Fishing? Scuba Diving? Kite Surfing? … or just kick back on a catamaran on a quiet Dolphin Cruise with your favourite drink in hand?
Want to enjoy a freshly grilled lobster with your loved one on a sailing boat, while the pink sun sets in the Indian Ocean? Want to go pub crawling or night clubbing?
Grand Baie has it all – and due to the competition, prices tend to be very attractive, regardless of the activity.
In short; if you’re looking for the stereotypical powder beach with crystal clear waters, there are plenty of alternatives elsewhere, but for water based activities, action packed nights out and gourmet dining, Grand Baie is where to head.
Tip: Apart from the major hotels, very few cafés and restaurants in Mauritius have beach front locations. Café de la Plage at Grand Baie Beach is a refreshing exception. Here you can enjoy a simple coffee or a tasty lunch right next to the water.
