INVEST FOR BETTER MONTHLY E-NEWSLETTER APRIL 2023

Spring Clean Your Money

No alt text provided for this image

With the arrival of April, we are welcoming back the Spring –a time of renewal, a time to delight in flowers blooming, a time to stretch our wings again as the days lengthen and the sun shines. While the exact timing may differ depending on where we live in the country – or the world – the promise of new life is reemerging for many of us.?

Since I was a child, spring has also meant cleaning. Once again, we open the windows filling the house with fresh air. We remove the covers from our patio furniture and create outdoor spaces to enjoy with family and friends. We shift the clothes in our closets in recognition of the warmer days ahead. And we begin to plan for the days of summer when children will be out of school and vacations begin.?

In the US, April is also tax season. While usually a task that none of us relish, we can use this time of forced financial analysis to find a pocket of money that we “clean” by moving it into an investment that is more aligned with our values. Perhaps it is a stock investment that is under water because of the down-turn in the stock market. Maybe you are ready to shift your savings account to a local bank that supports your community. It could even be a tax refund that you want to invest in a more meaningful way. Whatever the opportunity, this is a good time to reassess your investments to cleanse them of the impacts you don’t want to see in the world and to put them to work creating the outcomes you hope will flourish.

Join Our April Cohort

There is still time to join our April cohort and participate in our foundational best-of-class core curriculum. Over a period of 6-months, you will learn together with a small group of 8-20 women, that we call a Circle. Through your Circle, you will not only increase your personal investing knowledge, you will also build a trusted community. You will have, possibly for the first time ever, a safe space to talk about your money and a like-minded group of women who will provide you with the encouragement and support you need to achieve your financial goals. IFB Circles are a fun, engaging way to build your investing confidence, learn with others, and overcome obstacles that have prevented you from taking action.

When you participate in an IFB Circle, you are in great company. Over 1,000 women have participated in over 100 Circles to date – and we are just getting started. When you join IFB, you are connected to a global movement in which women are taking control of their money, becoming confident investors, and putting their money to work for themselves and the social good. Together we are harnessing the power of financial systems to invest in a better world.

From Our Community

A self-described “recovering non-profit executive who now advises other non-profits and social impact organizations,”?Jenny Everett?has had a fascinating career. Like many, her path was anything but straight. Jenny’s ambitions kicked off in high school when she spent time in the Dominican Republic building latrines, then migrated through several years of living and working in Latin America. At the turn of the millennium, Jenny returned to the United States where she became involved in the newly emerging dot.com industry. Before long, however, she realized that she needed work that made more of a difference. This brought Jenny into the world of philanthropy and, ultimately, to recognize the power of combining doing well financially with doing good for the world.

To realize her dream of a job at the intersection of money and values, Jenny returned to school and got her MBA. Upon graduating, she joined the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE), a global network of organizations that catalyze entrepreneurship in developing countries. Jenny was there almost 12 years, serving as Managing Director the majority of that time. Along the way, she sat on the boards of numerous social enterprises.?

Even with all of this background and day-to-day immersion in the world of impact investing, Jenny did not apply what she was learning to her own money. She started thinking about it in 2009 when she joined ANDE, but she was not doing anything.?

About two years ago, after leaving ANDE, Jenny stumbled upon Activate Your Money and Invest for Better. Joining her first Circle was such a great experience, that Jenny decided to partner with another woman and lead a Circle. Now she is so passionate about helping other women take control of their money and move it into things they care about that she is about to lead her second Circle. We love to hear stories like this, and are so delighted to have Jenny as part of our community!!
