Invest in Basics
They make your fun pieces sing!
It actually amazes me how many pairs of black pants a woman can have in her wardrobe. Now’s here’s where it gets interesting ….. maybe only one pair are fabulous, if you are lucky! Relate to this yet?
Some of them won’t fit, they might be really worn out and you can’t see it (yes, been guilty of that one!) or they came out of the ark and belong in the 80’s. Don’t laugh. It happens. I’ve seen it!
I have a stovepipe charcoal pant that matches a jacket. This outfit is now 10 years old. It has been altered, taken in, I’ve added velvet to the sleeves for fun and it WILL not die. It’s a quality fabric and I love it. I’ve re-hemmed the pants many times over the years. Cost per wear is so low at this stage and it still looks fantastic!
I have a high waisted flowing 7/8 pant with a little cropped jacket. This outfit is now 5 years old. It wear it together and split it up. It has been altered as my shape has changed. It’s starting to look tired. I’ll get another year out of it.
I have a humble tailored black pant that I hardly wear. It’s taking up space in my wardrobe. I’ve tried to toss it out and keep putting it back. I need to toughen the hell up with that eh? Take a dose of my own medicine?
The same thing happens with jeans. So many pairs of the same denim. Yet you keep wearing the same pair? Interesting eh?
So if you have a wardrobe full of basics, you are usually the one complaining that you have NOTHING to wear. You trawl the shopping centres looking, looking, not wanting to spend money. You are thrifty, but you CAN justify the basic black pant, and it’s on sale, so why not. You’ll wear it, right? Well, your best laid intentions just went horribly wrong.
Yes, PLEASE invest in basics and do it consciously. Only purchase fabulous basics. Don’t focus on sale items. Get your bloody money’s worth and buy well!
So often I will see a wardrobe full of colour. Full of interesting, artistic, creative pieces. And the owner says, “I have nothing to wear”. No, it’s true. She dosen’t. She is attracted to these beautiful colourful garments who have no family, no friends, no basics to make them work!
So what’s the solution?
- Invest in good quality basics. Seriously, just buy the BEST you can afford.
- Educate yourself on which fabrics pill and which fabrics will earn their rent
- Purchase the best shoe for your body
- Don’t be a tight tina! Cough up the dough for quality. It will save you in the long run
- Avoid instant gratification of that damn sale and the on line marketing campaign
- Shop for an outfit, not a piece
- make sure that each piece you purchase works back with at LEAST 6 other items in your collection
- Your purchase must work across at least 3 aspects of your life, work, casual, cocktail
