Invesco QQQ's Annual March Madness Advertising Push
If you’ve watched a single game of the NCAA tournament, you’ve almost certainly seen at least one Invesco QQQ advertisement. The ETF is making a significant effort to build its brand awareness by running multiple ad spots during each game throughout the tournament. Let’s take a deeper look at the ETF and why it makes such a large push every March Madness.
Invesco QQQ (NASDAQ: QQQ) is an exchange-traded fund that allows investors access to some of the world’s most innovative companies by tracking the Nasdaq-100. Since its formation in 1999, QQQ has outperformed the S&P500 with ridiculous margins (see graph below). With an AUM of over $190B and 102 holdings, QQQ delivers exposure to the fastest-growing, transformative companies on the forefront of technology like augmented reality, cloud computing, big data, mobile payments, streaming surfaces, electric vehicles and more.
QQQ’s 10 largest holdings are Apple (12.57%), Microsoft Corp (10.04%), Amazon.com Inc (7.39%), Tesla Inc (4.6%), NVIDIA Corp (4.29%), Alphabet Inc Class C (3.94%), Alphabet Inc Class A (3.76%), Meta Platforms Inc Class A (3.38%), Broadcom Inc (1.88%) and Costco Wholesale Corp (1.80%).
March Madness is the perfect time to advertise the QQQ ETF for two reasons: its target audience and its relation to the tournament.
The tournament is off to a great start already, pulling in an average of 9 million views per timeslot–up 12% from 2021. Also seeing a double-digit increase comes from the viewership of the tournament’s key demographic: Men aged 18-54. Invesco is going after this demographic, who are typically on the leading edge of both investing and innovative technology.
The tournament also used an abundance of new technology created by companies that the ETF holds. Technology like real-time CGI, volumetric video technology and optical tracking technology are all used during the tournament and can be accessed through investing in the ETF. This allows viewers to create an easy and authentic brand connection from Invesco QQQ to the tournament, making March Madness the ideal time for an advertising push.

My name is Matthew Rigsbee and I am a senior at the?University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill?majoring in Advertising and Public Relations at the?Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Ever since I invested in my first stock in high school, I fell in love with learning about the economy, stocks, and eventually cryptocurrencies.
My goal with this blog is to highlight the intersection of the finance world with the advertising industry. There are so many new advertising techniques that are emerging out of the FinTech and cryptocurrency spaces, and I want to be your guide to understanding how many companies are leveraging these techniques to change the way people, young and old, involve themselves in the markets. I will use real-world examples of how some of the top brands in the FinTech and cryptocurrency spaces are using game-changing advertising and marketing techniques.
