Intuition

I struggled with overweight for more than 20 years. 3 years ago, I lost 35 kg and to this day I have not regained any of it.

At some point in my early youth, I remember thinking of 100 kg as a benchmark I’d like to hit one day. The picture I had in mind was that of a corpulent well-trained body. What can I tell you? I hit that mark, I even surpassed it, and it all happened rather seamlessly. In hindsight, I became complacent about my lack of fitness and turned a blind eye to its effects, quite literally.?

Whereas I had read reports about rather extreme intentional weight loss, I had never met anybody who had done it in real life. Not until I ran into a dear colleague after a longer time. I didn’t know she had gone on a weight-loss journey, and I was profoundly amazed to see her truly rejuvenated. She inspired me, as I am sure she did and has done with many others ever since, and I told her I would do my very best to follow her example.?

It took me longer than I care to admit, but I did it, eventually, and I wish to dedicate this 1st Edition of my newsletter to you, Sue. Thank you, for everything! I feel privileged to have met and worked alongside some amazing and inspirational men and women of diverse backgrounds, ages and lived experience. They all have a few things in common, such as an intuitive flair, a great situational awareness, and the ability to deal appropriately and tactfully with difficult situations, issues or problems. Sue is one of them.

A common misconception is that we don’t need to become active or even worry about our health or ‘wellness’ as long as we are not feeling unwell. Wellness is not, and it should not be reduced to, the absence of disease or illness.?

Wellness has been described as multidimensional, including Spiritual, Physical, Emotional, Career, Intellectual, Environmental, Social (SPECIES), e.g. by The School of Health Sciences and Wellness at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Each dimension contributes to our own sense of wellness or quality of life, and each may affect and overlap with the others. At times, one may be more prominent than others, but neglect of any one dimension for any length of time will likely have adverse effects on overall health.

Going back to this edition’s focus, physical wellness is frequently defined as the ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows one to get through daily activities without undue fatigue or physical stress.?

Optimal physical wellness, including optimal body weight, can be achieved through a combination of regular physical activity, diversified and balanced eating, adequate sleep, and primary illness prevention. The question is, what is the right combination? As you probably know or imagined, there is no one-size-fits-all answer.?

The first step is to understand each element in this combination, and there is an oversupply of information readily available. The second step is to fine-tune each of the elements of the above-mentioned combination to what your individual body and brain really need. What will help you here is intuition. In the wellness industry, we hear the phrase “listen to your body” all the time. However, few people seem to have understood that it is more than a?phrase du jour.?In fairness, learning what your body and brain really need is much easier said than done. We are not used to it, and there is the power of habit – which I may delve into in a future edition.

Intuition is used in different ways, for instance referring to a feeling that arises within your body that only you experience. In my view, such inner sensing or inner insight is the intended meaning of the phrase “listen to your body”. It is also the key I found to permanent success in achieving optimal physical wellness.??
