Introvert, Tech and Turnover Rate
You might wonder what I am talking about….
The thing is that I consider myself a Social Introvert…and actually after doing many tests and the Myers Briggs (16 personalities), I corroborated that.
According to both tests, I am an INFJ –Introverted Intuitive Feeling and Judging otherwise known as “The Insightful visionary” or “Advocate”, mainly described as “supportive companions and devoted helpers, they put people first; as a result, they tend to focus on finding or creating harmony. They’re often looking for a deeper meaning or purpose in life, they’re innovative thinkers motivated by their vision of a better future for everyone involved”.
And yes, I feel identified by that, I want to change the world for the better!
So what does this have to do with technology…well, I am always fascinated to learn and discover this sector, but to be honest…I don’t think I would be a good tech person or employee…mainly because the pressure they have is so high that I don’t think I can compromise my sleep hours or my ME time to be firefighting problems anytime they appear.
The IT sector is one of the more demanding and with high levels of stress and overwhelming and the staff turnover is high because they are in great demand. So if they feel unsupported by the company they know they will get another job.
Mid or IT management has to deal with a lot of pressure because they constantly have to fulfil expectations from their Top levels (Directors and CEs), they need to deal with their employee's needs but also be on top of the fast and constant changes of technology.
And many times those 3 areas don’t communicate effectively. So no wonder why they are super stressed most of the time – no offence I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes and I truly admire them.
So how companies can support their IT department to avoid the cost of staff turnover?
This is not only the problem of HR departments anymore, It has to start from the top level down. When organisations understand that looking after every level of staff and their wellbeing are savings and not costs, the companies will rate higher in so many aspects:
- with more staff retention and satisfaction
- fewer costs in absences
- more productivity and efficiency
- higher profits because is cheaper to retain an employee than constantly replace them.
Then they will understand that investment in how to tackle Productivity, Wellbeing, and Effective Communication is worth it.

2 年Such an interesting article @Claudia Romero. I never knew that about the tech industry, most of the people I know seem to be laid back in this field, constantly lost in their world, I guess problem-solving. But I agree with you. I would like to make a difference and have an impact in the world, it will have to be another way than tech. Thank you

2 年I too have done the Myers Briggs and can relate. I am borderline INFJ/INTJ. I totally get what you are talking about and how stress affects IT sectors especially hard.
