Introvert Power
I agree with many points Susan Cain put forth in her presentation of ‘The Power of Introverts.’ It is the solitude, the time alone to think, read, study and/or write that recharges the introvert’s battery. I believe general bias toward extroverts is real and the lauding of this personality trait does in fact often overlook the creative, productive, knowledgeable qualities introverts possess. I have often approached my work just as she has described to be an ideal. The strategy of thinking through and focusing in on a problem or subject alone and then bringing the group into play to flush out more ideas and solicit feedback (Cain, 2012). What’s more, I feel as an introvert I am naturally more inclined to listen, which is much more valuable in learning and finding solutions than thinking aloud for everyone to enjoy. Mark Twain said it best, “If we were meant to talk more than listen, we would have two mouths and one ear.
When I consider Susan Cain’s assertions I am heartened by the skillful balance she calls for in diversity of personalities. I feel as if she assigns high value to all groups, but for the sake of understanding and representing an unprotected class, she presents the true value of introverts in the business setting. Cain shares and defends the precious trait our society has long overlooked, simply because of its quiet and solitary manner. Unchecked extroversion, a trait steeped in ebullience, excitability, dominance, risk-taking, thick skin, boldness and quick decision without much thought has its uses, but can also present outsized problems. I believe Cain is taking a position as an advocate for introverts because she knows and believes in their great power of thinking before speaking (Warner 2012). The power of quiet is very strong. For example, I began meditating a handful of years ago. I quietly focus on breath and solitarily consider problems during my relaxed crisscross straight back sitting, for about an hour. I can say without a doubt my very best and practical workplace solutions have come from these sessions. Without them I believe I would not have progressed in my career of family life as far as I have. Personally, I would categorize the revelations I gain in quiet contemplation as impactful and profound in reaching successful outcomes. What would be even more helpful is to create space at work for quiet solitary reflection. With it introverts would really harness their power of thought!
