An Introduction to HR
Paula Fisher LLB (hons), LLM
I am the founder and MD of Practical HR Ltd and Your Business Guide Ltd. I work with SMEs and in partnership with HR consultants and solicitors, offering them unique HR compliance solutions for their clients.
So, what is HR, and why is it important to your business?
Following on from my back-to-basics article, here is a simple overview of Human Resources (HR) to explain what it is and why it is important, with links to further content if you want to dig a bit deeper.
HR is about people
HR is about people. It is an essential part of running any business because you cannot run or build a successful business without good people, and quite frankly, the better your people are, the better your business will be.
HR is not about being "pink and fluffy". HR should be about a practical and effective approach to managing people that supports the organisation and helps the business achieve its objectives.?
Your people are?one of your greatest assets. This may sound like a cliché, but it’s true.
Regulations, Legal Requirements and Procedures
But there are regulations, legal requirements and procedures to comply with surrounding every aspect of employment.?So, people can also be one of your biggest liabilities – especially if you don’t get HR compliance right. Sometimes it can be difficult to know where to start and exactly what you need to do. To add to this, employment law is always changing!
SMEs can often feel overwhelmed, frustrated and out of control when it comes to HR as they generally have limited in-house resources or expertise.? This can mean that they can, unknowingly, fall foul of employment law or regulations.
?It’s important for every employer to get good HR in place. It will reduce risk, save time and allow you to get on with other aspects of running the business.
?HR Made Easy
But HR also needs to be made easy and this is why we developed YourHR.guide as an easy-to-use HR resource for SMEs. It explains HR without legal jargon and will help you navigate through HR and employment law and help you achieve HR compliance. It covers the day-to-day issues that can arise within an SME, from new starters, training, absence, non-performance, wellbeing, termination, and much more.
