Dimension Analysis is a major task while preparing inventory map for Landslide. Traditionally Satellite/Aerial Images were used for these analysis which was slightly expensive. Drone is a good alternate for Satellite/Aerial imageries.
Globe View Technologies was appointed for Dimension analysis for one of the devastating Landslide which occur in Pettimudi, Kerala on 6 Aug 2020.
Study
In this study, we use advance Drone to collect high resolution Imageries and videography. In total, 5 flight were performed with different altitudes which delivered several thousand of high resolution photographs.
The 3D position and orientation of the cameras and the XYZ location of each feature in the photographs was estimated using bundle block adjustment.
Based on these images and detailed GNSS measurements of the landslide area, orthophotos as well as generated Digital Surface Models (±5 cm), Digital Terrain Model (±5 cm), Contours (50cm), 4K Videography, 3d Model, Flow direction, velocity and mass balance was delivered from these datasets.
The 3D reconstructed from the sets of photographs is very accurate giving the measurements up to cm level and even small objects could be easily identified. In addition, digital elevation model (DEM) of sub meter resolution could be easily generated and used for various applications. Hence drone-based imagery in combination with 3D scene reconstruction algorithms provide flexible and effective tools to map and monitor landslide apart from accurately assessing the dimensions of the landslides.
Conclusion
The application of the UAV turned out to be a cost- and time-effective tool for landslide-monitoring that provides researchers and engineers with accurate high-resolution dataset. UAV is well suited for landslide monitoring as well as for other small scale mass movement monitoring.
Laser scanning is often expensive and time-consuming. In contrast, UAVs constitute a fast, cost-efficient and practical tool and provide the user with high-resolution aerial pictures and DSMs within a few hours.
The drone survey has proven to be an easy and effective approach for landslide monitoring and surveying.
