An Introduction to Environmental Impact Assessments for Professionals

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) are crucial transdisciplinary tools for public and private professionals and are an essential component of Corporate Social Responsibility projects. They can be used to understand the social and environmental impacts of plans, programs, projects, or policies within your organization.

?

Impact Academy by CSRBOX in collaboration with TISS Mumbai and Monash University, Australia have come together to provide you with an overview and know-how about how to conduct Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) as professionals working in the Corporate Social Responsibility and Social Impact Space.

Key recommendations from the sessions:

?1)???An Introduction to the History and Development of EIA

?Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a tool used to determine the significant environmental effects of a project or development proposal. EIA is one of the most successful environmental policy achievements of the twentieth century. There was no EIA 37 years ago, but it is now a formal process in many countries and is practiced in over 100 countries. With the passage of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) in 1969 in the United States, EIA as an obligatory regulatory mechanism began in the early 1970s. EIA investigates both the positive and negative repercussions of the project and guarantees that these effects are considered throughout project planning. It assists in identifying potential environmental consequences of the planned project, provides mitigation strategies, and predicts if significant unfavorable environmental effects will occur even after mitigation measures are applied. Environmental assessment provides several benefits, such as environmental protection, optimum resource utilization, and project time and cost savings, because it considers the environmental effects of the project and their mitigation early in the project planning cycle.

?

2)???An introduction to popular tools and types of EIA

There are 5 major types of environmental assessment. tools and they are as follows:

  1. State of the Environment (SOE)
  2. Integrated Environmental Assessment and Reporting (IEA)
  3. Environmental impact assessment (EIA)
  4. Corporate environmental assessment and reporting
  5. Strategic environmental assessment (SEA)

These fundamental categories of environmental impact assessment are extremely important, as is the requirement for policy responses for efficient environmental management. These factors offered a process for sustainable resource and environmental utilization to avert damage during environmental impact assessment.
