Introduction to Design Thinking: Unleashing Creativity in Students

I am happy to share my experience with my mentees on Design Thinking Seminar conducted to the students of Sri Ambal Public School,Sirumugai.The seminar aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the stages of design thinking and equip them with practical tools to apply these stages effectively in their own projects and organizations. Design thinking is a structured approach to innovation that has gained popularity across various sectors for solving complex problems and generating innovative solutions. The topics covered in the seminar are

1. Introduction to Design Thinking

• Definition and core principles of design thinking.
• Importance of human-centered design and empathy in innovation.

2. Stage 1: Empathize

• Understanding the needs, wants, and challenges of users or stakeholders.
• Techniques for conducting empathetic research (interviews, observations, etc.).
• Case studies and examples of successful empathy-driven designs.

3. Stage 2: Define

• Analyzing and synthesizing research findings to define the core problem statement.
• Group exercise: Defining a problem statement from a given scenario.

4. Stage 3: Ideate

• Techniques for generating creative ideas (brainstorming, mind mapping, etc.).
• Encouraging a culture of divergent thinking.
• Idea selection and prioritization methods.

5. Stage 4: Prototype

• Creating low-fidelity and rapid prototypes to visualize and communicate ideas.
• Iterative prototyping and feedback loops.

6. Stage 5: Test

• Importance of user feedback in refining prototypes and solutions.
• Case study: Testing and iterating a prototype based on user feedback.
