Introducing SQL Server 2022
Today we have announced the next major release of SQL Server 2022, now in private preview. SQL Server 2022 has built-in Azure enablement and innovations in security, performance, availability, data virtualization, and enhancements to the T-SQL language.
SQL Server has been creating capabilities for a hybrid data platform for years including SQL Server on Azure Arc-enabled servers. Now SQL Server 2022 takes this to the next level with:
- Seamless and managed disaster recovery using Azure SQL Managed Instance
- Near real-time analytics with Synapse link
- Visibility and access controls with Azure Purview integration
Every SQL Server release has always created innovations in the “meat and potatoes†of SQL Server: security, performance, and availability. SQL Server 2022 keeps that tradition going with features like:
- SQL Server Ledger
- Built-in query intelligence
- Multi-write replication with automatic conflict resolution
Built-in query intelligence includes new updates to the popular Query Store feature of SQL Server including:
- Query Store now on by default for new databases
- Query Store is now supported on read replicas allowing performance analytics on your read workloads
- Query Store hints to easily shape query plans with no code changes
In addition, the next generation of Intelligent Query Processing (IQP) includes solutions to some of the most common problems you face today, all with no code changes required including:

- Parameter Sensitive Plan optimization to allow multiple plans in cache for the same stored procedure or parameterized SQL statement.
- MAXDOP and CE model feedback using the Query store to create a feedback cycle to automatically adapt and resolve problems with common query patterns.
- New enhancements to memory grant feedback include persistence and new algorithms to smoothly handle memory grant fluctuations.
And there is more...
We have other new capabilities in the database engine including security enhancements, scalability improvements, and improvements to backups with better compression using Intel QuickAssist Technology and cross-platform snapshot backups.
We have new extensions to the T-SQL language to support data virtualization and backup/restore with S3 compatible storage systems. Furthermore, T-SQL will support new JSON functions and time-series capabilities.
SQL Server 2022 is here and we want your feedback. If you want to work directly with the engineering team sign-up for the private preview at?EAP Signup You can learn more about SQL Server 2022 at https://aka.ms/sqlserver2022.
In addition, I invite you to watch me with the famous Microsoft Mechanics team at https://aka.ms/SQLMechanics22.
Our journey with SQL Server 2022 is just starting. We look forward to giving you more details and updates as we move forward in 2022.
