Will Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-Atlas) be the Comet of the Decade?

Discovered in early 2023 by observatories in South Africa and China, Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-Atlas) originates from the distant Oort Cloud. For a year, it has aroused keen interest among astronomers and astronomy enthusiasts, including the Unistellar community. Nearly 90 observers have contributed to collecting data on the evolution of its brightness, thus refining predictions about its behavior as it approaches the center of the solar system. Models developed by Ariel Graykowski, a researcher at the SETI Institute and head of the cometary activity program for Unistellar, suggest that the comet could become as bright as the North Star this fall, offering a spectacular sight to the naked eye.

SETI Live Replay: Europa Clipper is Go! Mission Passes Milestone Toward October Launch

In the quest to find life beyond Earth, icy worlds within our solar system are full of potential. Europa, one of Jupiter's four largest (Galilean) moons, is one possible target because of the vast ocean beneath its icy shell. That ocean, heated by the push and pull of Jupiter, could contain life. The Europa Clipper mission will send a spacecraft to the distant moon, and the spacecraft's instruments will determine if the conditions truly are suitable. This week, NASA announced that Europa Clipper passed another milestone toward the October 10 launch window. Communications specialist Beth Johnson is joined by Project Staff Scientist and Science Communications Lead Cynthia Phillips to discuss the mission and how it could answer the question, Are we alone?

Big Picture Science: Cold Comfort

Another scorching summer has us blasting the AC and grabbing a chilled drink. Air conditioning and refrigeration may beat the heat, but they also present a dilemma. The more we use them, the more greenhouse gases we emit, the hotter the planet becomes, and the more we require artificial cooling. Can we escape this feedback loop? We look at the origins of these chilling technologies, tour the extensive chain of cold that keeps food from perishing, and consider how a desert city like Phoenix could not exist without AC.
