Introducing SEOntology: A Universal Framework for SEO Data

We're excited to announce the first release of SEOntology, an open-source framework developed to unify and standardize SEO data across the industry. SEOntology aims to address one of the pressing challenges in modern SEO: data fragmentation.

In today's SEO landscape, professionals juggle multiple tools, platforms, and methodologies, each with its own data structure and terminology. This fragmentation creates information silos, hampering efficiency and limiting our ability to fully leverage SEO data. SEOntology wants to provide an initial answer to this challenge - and help us (and the AI) handle, interpret, and share SEO and Marketing data.

What is SEOntology?

At its core, SEOntology is a powerful trio of concepts working in harmony:

  1. A shared vocabulary for SEO terms.
  2. A framework illustrating how these concepts interconnect.
  3. A reference frame for automating SEO and marketing tasks.

In essence, SEOntology aims to create a universal language for SEOs, enabling both humans and AI to communicate more effectively in this domain.

As ??? Federico Rebeschini once said, SEOntology is the "USB-C of SEO Data" – a standardized interface that wants to connect diverse elements of the SEO ecosystem seamlessly.

The Need for SEOntology

In the SEO industry we use a wide array of tools and platforms, each with its own unique data structure and terminology. While this diversity offers many options, it also presents challenges due to the lack of standardization. SEOntology wants to address some of these challenges by providing a unified framework for SEO data, offering the following benefits:

  1. Improved Data Interoperability: SEOntology facilitates seamless data transfer between different tools and platforms, eliminating the need for time-consuming data translations and reducing the risk of data loss or misinterpretation.
  2. Consistent Interpretation of SEO Concepts: With a standardized vocabulary, SEOntology ensures that SEO concepts are understood uniformly across the industry, fostering clearer communication and more accurate analysis.
  3. Enhanced Efficiency: By streamlining data processes, SEOntology significantly reduces the time and resources spent on data management, allowing SEO professionals to focus more on strategy and less on data wrangling.
  4. Environmental Sustainability: One of the most overlooked benefits of data standardization is its positive environmental impact. SEOntology can dramatically reduce the number of unnecessary crawls by enabling better sharing of existing data. Let me give you a practical example, if Botify already crawls your website WordLift doesn't need to re-crawl it to automate your structured data markup. We can simply import the data as long as we agree on formats and definitions.
  5. Increased Flexibility in Tool Choice: SEOntology breaks down the barriers of vendor lock-in, giving enterprises and SEO professionals the freedom to choose and switch between tools that best suit their needs without fear of data incompatibility.
  6. Facilitation of AI and Machine Learning: A standardized data framework lays the groundwork for more advanced AI and machine learning applications in SEO, opening up new possibilities for automation and predictive analytics.

By addressing these key areas, SEOntology aims to create a more efficient, sustainable, and innovative SEO ecosystem.

SEOntology and AI: A Powerful Synergy

As artificial intelligence continues to play an increasingly significant role in SEO, semantic data becomes even more crucial. By infusing SEO know-how into AI agents, we can create more intelligent, context-aware systems.

One of the key advantages of SEOntology is its ability to codify SEO best practices into a format that AI can understand and apply. For example, we can develop and share a set of simple rules for guiding AI agents in SEO tasks. These rules can cover various aspects of SEO, including:

  • Improving E-E-A-T (Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness): An AI agent could be instructed that to enhance E-E-A-T, an article should have an author marked up as schema:Person.
  • Enhancing author credibility: The AI could ensure that every author expresses schema:sameAs links in the markup to other web pages where they are active, such as social media profiles.
  • Optimizing content structure: Rules could be set for ideal heading structures, content length, or keyword density based on SEO best practices.

By encoding these rules within the SEOntology framework, we create a powerful tool for AI-driven SEO. This not only helps in automating routine SEO tasks but also ensures consistency in applying SEO best practices across different platforms and projects.

We've already seen promising results in this area as we begin to use it for creating knowledge graphs and workflows for SEO AI Agents.

Love this, will review and hopefully have some things to contribute. I’ve long thought that there needs to be a standardized crawl archive format, ideally based on advertools and built with formats like parquet in mind.
