About Sarah

Could you elaborate on why having an expert specifically dedicated to R&D for Apparel is essential for Freudenberg Performance Materials?

The textile industry is responsible for about 10% of global CO2 emissions and substantial water pollution. Water consumption and waste generation are other major issues and millions of tons of textile waste are generated annually. Having an expert in R&D for Apparel is crucial to develop eco-friendly products. Experts like me focus on creating durable interlinings and using waste for new materials. Additionally, harmful chemicals used in production can be mitigated by employing certified, harmless substances. Our expertise is vital for innovation, meeting legislative standards, and proactively offering sustainable products.

What are unique insights or skills you have, that make you an expert in this field?

I am passionate about sustainable materials and working with new materials to achieve better performance at a competitive price. I excel in understanding and translating customer needs into products, fostering strong communication, creativity, and solution-oriented approaches. My focus on sustainability drives the development of products made from recycled or bio-based feedstock, contributing to a circular economy. I aim to deliver new, sustainable products that meet customer needs and industry demands.

How has your expertise evolved and grown over the years?

My interest in sustainable products has grown as more recycled materials have become available. Close collaboration with suppliers to develop market-specific fibers and adhesives has increased, as has participation in workshops and exchanges with customers and suppliers. This has enhanced my awareness and expertise in sustainability, driven by regulations and industry trends.

What trends do you see in your area of expertise in the coming years?

In the coming years, I foresee advancements in recycling technologies, particularly thermo-mechanical and chemical recycling, to create new fibers from used textiles. Developing interlinings that avoid microplastics will be crucial. Additionally, using certified, harmless chemicals and promoting garment durability to extend their lifespan will be key trends.

How do you stay updated with the latest developments, research, and trends in your area of expertise?

I stay updated by leveraging my extensive network within and outside Freudenberg, regularly engaging with suppliers, customers, universities, and institutes. I read extensively about sustainable products and processes and participate in workshops and congresses focused on sustainable textiles and industry advancements.
