Serendipitous Beginnings

The scene is February 2020, Brigham and Women's Hospital, a busy lab working on more effective ways to deliver therapeutics for multiple sclerosis.?

The team, led by Dr. Jeff Karp , Distinguished Chair and Professor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical school and Dr. Nitin Joshi , Assistant Professor at Brigham and Women’s and Harvard Medical School, had no idea what was about to happen to their lab, and the world.

In their pre-pandemic work, Karp and Joshi spent years researching how the nose and nasal cavity might be better used for delivering medicine and for health products: an effort that was about to become very, very relevant in an unexpected way.

You know what happened next. It was March 2020. The SARS-COV-2 pandemic began and overnight noses took on a much more sinister role. Research showed the virus was primarily transmitted via respiratory droplets, which largely find entry points through the nose to infect the nasal lining.?

Dr Jeff Karp, was asked to lead a task force to figure out how to better protect health care providers at the Mass General Brigham hospital, including what to do if they ran out of PPE.?

A Radically Simple Path to Respiratory Wellness

With stacks of research into intranasal therapeutics on their desks, Dr. Karp and Dr. Joshi saw an opportunity to develop a prevention tool that could be useful not just in hospitals, but for people around the world.?

Over the next few months their team tested hundreds of formulations, looking for a specific trifecta of potential benefits: 1) barrier protection, 2) broad spectrum virucidal & bactericidal properties, and 3) long lasting effect.?

If the ideal properties of this formulation could be achieved, they thought it could become part of the arsenal of tools to help people avoid SARS-COV-2 as we a broad range of airborne pathogens, like the cold, flu, RSV, and pneumonia. When the results demonstrated that they were really on to something, the team co-founded a company, Akita Biosciences , to commercialize their findings. They were joined by Christopher Lee , Ph.D, a serial entrepreneur, and I came on board as CEO.?

Today, our work is coming to fruition with the launch of Profi?, a new once-daily nasal spray to proactively support respiratory wellness.

Profi was developed using an approach of radical simplicity – the art and discipline of minimizing complexity at all levels. Applying these principles, we created a drug-free nasal spray formulated with ingredients that have been safely used intranasally before. Because we identified a formulation without drugs, we are able to manufacture and commercialize it rapidly – just in time for this cold & flu season.?
