Introducing the new ESPR guide by Musthad
By Francesca Maria Spinelli, Musthad
On March 30, 2022, a new Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) was proposed, providing a comprehensive framework to promote circularity and reduce environmental impact. This proposal builds on the previous Ecodesign Directive (2009/125/EC), which had already provided significant benefits to businesses active in the European market, although it only covered 31 product groups.
The results were very noticeable and positive: in 2021, there were recorded savings of 120 billion euros in energy costs and a 10% reduction in annual energy consumption for the products in those 31 categories.
The new proposal, which received approval from the European Parliament in April 2024, is particularly important to us because it introduces several new features.
First of all, it focuses on circularity in addition to the energy-related aspects already present in the previous directive. Secondly, it broadens its scope, affecting almost all categories of physical goods placed on the market (with the exception of pharmaceuticals and food). The textile sector will be given priority over other sectors due to its significant environmental impact.
At Musthad, we have written a new guide on the ESPR to give you an overview of the regulation that is about to come into effect and will greatly impact the textile sector.
