Introducing the MTN Animal Identification & Management Solution (AIMS)

We are pleased to introduce the MTN Animal Identification and Management Solution (MTN AIMS), which makes it possible for animal owners to identify, verify and manage their livestock, pets and other animals electronically.

With MTN AIMS, we seek to help address the challenge of animal rustling or theft across the country. This will also facilitate easier export of Nigerian livestock to the international market, for which animal identification is a pre-requisite .

How does it work?

 The animal is injected with a harmless bio-degradable Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) chip with a unique identification code (ISO 11784/11785 numbering standards) which is registered under its owner’s profile on the MTN Animal Identification and Management portal.

 Subsequently, using an RFID scanner, the code of the animal can be read and sent via SMS to the short code - 58123 to identify its authentic owner.

 How does it help?

 With the MTN AIMS:

• Law enforcement agents can verify animal ownership, and thus curb and intercept animal rustlers.
• Animal owners can be reached in the event that their stolen or missing livestock, pets or animals are found.
• Buyers can confirm true ownership of livestock, pets and other animals at point of purchase.
• Herders can send distress calls via the MTN AIMS mobile app on their phones in the event of an emergency.
• Health officials can ensure better control and surveillance of animal diseases.

The identification process which involves embedding the RFID chips in the animals costs N2,000 only per animal. This is a one-off payment, while verification through SMS short code - 58123 will be N50 per transaction.
