Introducing Metomic’s New Data Security Features for Google Workspace
Today, collaboration tools like Google Drive and Gmail are essential. They help teams collaborate and be more productive, no matter where they’re located. However, these tools also bring significant data security challenges resulting from employee error, insider threat and, for some businesses, compliance challenges.
That’s why I’m so excited to share that Metomic has just launched some new features that will make protecting your sensitive data in Google Workspace apps easier and more effective than ever before.
Introducing Google Groups for DLP
We are thrilled to announce Google Groups for DLP. This feature enables IT & security teams to enforce customised data loss prevention (DLP) measures across different teams, regions or departments. Additionally, data from Google Groups can be used to create workflows outside of Google, such as preventing any teams, other than the finance team, from sharing PCI data in Slack. This gives security teams visibility and control so they can ensure sensitive data only gets into the hands of the people or the teams that need to have access to it.
Google Drive Labels to enhance data workflows
In a significant upgrade to our platform, Metomic now reads and writes Google Drive Labels to enhance your data workflows. This new functionality allows you to connect your custom Google Drive Labels into Metomic, and use them to find the risks that matter to you.

Metomic can leverage existing labels in your Google Drive account. For example, automatically preventing files labelled “Confidential” from being shared externally. “ Metomic can also apply labels directly in Google Drive. For instance, you can set up a workflow to apply a “Customer Data” label to any file that contains PII? This labelling happens in Google Drive, allowing you to use these labels in other workflows inside or outside of Metomic. By doing this, Metomic ensures that files containing sensitive information, like SSNs, are correctly labelled and managed, enhancing your overall data security.
Why This Matters
Google’s productivity tools are used by over 44% of the market. They enable productivity and collaboration but also pose security risks. Our research shows that 40% of Google Drive files contain sensitive data. Without proper security, these files are vulnerable.
By integrating Google Groups and Labels data, Metomic can take a more granular approach to customising workflows to govern data, manage admin permissions, and modify access controls easily. The Google Drive Labels feature offers a centralised view of all labels within the Metomic dashboard, enabling users to more easily find the risks that matter to them. Additionally, our sharing detection and remediation capabilities help you identify and address risks caused by widespread sharing, before they become major issues.
Our integrations come with automated notifications, which can either be configured to be sent to employees to alert them when sensitive data might be at risk, or directly to security teams. Or both. We believe that data security works best as a shared responsibility between data security teams and the employees themselves. By empowering employees to make informed decisions about the files they’re creating, editing or sharing, they quickly become active participants in the battle to keep sensitive data secure.
At Metomic, we know how crucial Google’s tools are for achieving your business goals. We also know how vulnerable these tools can be to security and compliance risks, without the right visibility and controls in place. This is such exciting news! So many modern businesses are using Google and its suite of productivity tools. Implementing the right data security tools can give them peace of mind that their sensitive data is being kept secure.
