Introducing Mayor Bibb as the New Climate Mayors Chair!

We're excited to announce that the City of Cleveland - City Hall Mayor Justin M. Bibb has been elected as the new Chairman of the Climate Mayors . Under his leadership, Cleveland has seen advancements in affordable solar energy, the adoption of the 15-Minute City Framework, and historic federal funding mobilization for rapid decarbonization. His policy changes include passing an improved Complete and Green Streets Ordinance and proposing climate resilience measures.
As the Chair of Climate Mayors, Mayor Bibb prioritizes increasing recognition, building funding infrastructure, and emphasizing regional engagement, with a strong focus on ensuring federal funding benefits vulnerable communities.

The Mayor's Office of Sustainability is proud to announce that the City of Cleveland has been awarded a $340,961 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). This investment will help expand drop-off composting locations, increase waste diversion services, and provide subsidized composting subscriptions for SNAP-eligible households.?

In late 2023, we kicked off Cleveland's climate action update?with community engagements aimed at informing the creation of a Climate Risk & Vulnerability Assessment (CRVA). Strategic and intentional efforts were taken to authentically engage residents in historically disinvested communities and adapt feedback from residents and partners throughout the process.?
The general public was invited to participate in interactive sessions across Central Fairfax, Clark Fulton, Downtown, and Union-Miles neighborhoods. Participants were divided into breakout groups that focused on identifying Cleveland's vulnerable neighborhoods, populations, assets, and systems. Throughout?these sessions,?we saw common themes rise to the forefront such as poor infrastructure, health concerns, and a general lack of knowledge &?resources available within the community.?Key climate hazards were identified as poor air quality, extreme heat, heavy rainfall & flooding, and extreme storms.
During these sessions, diverse concerns were also raised such as an increase in gun violence on extreme heat days and the stigma of public transit?- emphasizing the multifaceted impacts of climate hazards within our neighborhoods. These engagement sessions adopted a community-driven approach, ensuring direct input from residents and prioritizing their perspectives in the development of the CRVA and the overall climate action update.?There will be many more opportunities to provide input throughout the next year. Presented by Laurel School, all students grades 8-12 are invited to attend the Northeast Ohio Youth Climate Summit on April 14th.?This summit provides a platform for students to engage in discussions, workshops, and hands-on activities focused on climate change, sustainability, and environmental justice.?REGISTER
Coming out in full force, team members from the Office of Sustainability recently attended a full-day staff retreat at the Nature Center for Shaker Lakes. The agenda included interactive sessions exploring the why, where, who, and how we do our work.?
We are motivated by a collective commitment to advancing climate action and contributing to the overall well-being of our planet, family, and neighbors. With a strong dedication to building a better Cleveland region; our efforts extend across local, regional, and international boundaries to actively influence and advocate for the policies, legislation, and implementation strategies that foster sustainability within our communities.?Through collaborations with city departments, residents, and external partners we are working to address the prioritized environmental and climate justice challenges within our region.
In fostering inclusive initiatives, we aim to ensure that all members of our community, especially those in disadvantaged areas, have equal resources and opportunities. Ultimately, our goal is to make a positive impact within the community, champion equity & resiliency, and serve in the pursuit of a healthier environment and better quality of life for all.?
