Introducing Leadership Quotient (LQ): The Next Generation of Leadership Diagnostic

In our previous article, "The 4 Superpowers of a Great Startup Leader," we outlined the essential abilities and skills that set successful leaders apart. Many of you found the framework valuable but asked for a way to measure leaders using it. We're excited to introduce "Leadership Quotient (LQ)", a comprehensive metric that captures all aspects of leadership in one powerful number.

LQ, built on the tried-and-true 360-degree feedback method, is more accurate and actionable than others. This is due to three key design choices:

  1. Anchored in the 4 superpowers: Our framework for leadership precedes the measurement, allowing us to focus on the crucial 16 competencies. This emphasis on inputs makes LQ more effective than simply measuring outputs. For example, LQ will provide insight such as "You need to improve how you identify and prioritize growth opportunities" rather than just stating "Target achievement is below 60%."
  2. Objective rating system: To quantitatively measure leadership, we've implemented a 4-point scale (with an option for "can't say"). This allows us to mathematically calculate proficiency in each competency. While we value qualitative feedback, we still ask raters to provide comments (while maintaining anonymity and summarizing themes rather than sharing specific responses).
  3. Focusing on observable actions, not opinions: Many 360-feedback forms ask for ratings on leadership principles. However, asking for a rating on a leader's "founder mindset" relies on the rater's judgment and can introduce biases. Instead, we've translated competencies into observable behaviours. For example, instead of asking for a rating on the competency "execution planning," we ask for ratings on specific actions they've taken, such as "Has the leader broken down goals into specific actions?", "Has the leader clearly identified the highest priority initiatives?” and “Has the leader assigned owners and deadlines?"

  2. Nominate who should provide feedback (we recommend a combination of your manager, peers, and reportees)
  3. Get your report (as soon as the required number of stakeholders have completed their ratings)
