Introducing the K-12 Computer Science Framework

Introducing the K-12 Computer Science Framework

I couldn’t be more pleased about today’s launch of the K–12 Computer Science Framework. This collaborative effort brought together fourteen states and four school districts, dozens of writers and advisors, and leaders in corporate, nonprofit, and education sectors. Today marks a big moment for the computer science education movement in the United States.

The K-12 Computer Science Framework promotes a vision in which all students critically engage in computer science issues; approach problems in innovative ways; and create computational artifacts with a personal, practical, or community purpose. The framework offers a set of guidelines that could be used to inform the development of standards, curriculum, and computer science pathways, and also help school systems build capacity for teaching computer science.

Dozens of corporations, nonprofits, institutions, technology professionals, and notable members of the education community have announced their support of the framework, including Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, the framework steering committee of Association of Computing Machinery, Code.org,  Computer Science Teachers Association, Cyber Innovation Center, and National Math and Science Initiative, along with professors from many universities such as Stanford, Harvard, and Duke, and many more supporting organizations and individuals.

Computing is an integral part of our world and public demand for computer science education is at an all-time high. But most schools still don’t teach this subject – and when they do, we still need to improve the diversity of the students and ensure meaningful classes. The release of the K-12 Computer Science Framework marks a big step in the global movement to address this problem. For more information about the framework, including a list of practices and concepts, visit https://www.k12cs.org.

On a personal note, I want to thank Pat Yongpradit, Code.orgs chief academic officer, for his tireless effort on this project for over a year, and for all of our colleagues in the computer science education community who joined together in this effort. The unity among this diverse group has been the most encouraging part of the process.

Hadi Partovi, Code.org.

that's a wonderful development how can we at the third world be carried along

Thank you for sharing this! Hadi Partovi, I have heard so many incredible things about you from your team members. Love the ending of the video, mentioning how computer science is becoming a literacy for young individuals. Cannot wait to see what else Code.org has in store.
