Introducing Jamie McClelland, Trainee Chartered Accountant at VANTRU

1.???? How long have you worked in the corporate service industry? Provide us with a short summary of your work history prior to joining VANTRU.

Before joining VANTRU, I gained valuable experience in finance and accounting through various roles. My career began as a Finance Assistant, where I gained foundational experience in financial operations. I later progressed to an Accounts Assistant role, supporting bookkeeping activities and developing core accounting skills.

2.???? When did you join VANTRU and what is your job role?

I joined VANTRU as a Trainee Chartered Accountant in September 2024. In this role, I am responsible for supporting various accounting tasks, including preparing financial accounts and assisting with tax returns under the guidance of senior accountants. I am gaining hands-on experience in financial analysis and company secretarial areas of the business, which is essential for my professional development as I work towards becoming a qualified Chartered Accountant.?

3.???? What do you enjoy most about your job?

?I enjoy numerous aspects of my role, but I really love the opportunities I have to learn and grow in a dynamic environment and as part of a supportive team. Working alongside experienced professionals while handling responsibilities, from preparing financial statements to company secretarial, keeps each day exciting and engaging.

?4.???? What does an average day look like for you?

An average day typically involves a mixture of tasks. I usually start my day by reviewing emails and planning my tasks, which might include preparing VAT returns, uploading invoices, or gathering documentation for clients.

?Throughout the day, I may attend meetings with senior accountants or the company secretary to discuss ongoing projects or client needs. I also spend time working on specific assignments, such as reconciling accounts or assisting with VAT returns.

5.???? What advice would you give to a business regarding corporate services?

There are two main pieces of advice that I would give to businesses. Firstly, it’s crucial for businesses to prioritise compliance by adhering to all legal and regulatory requirements as this will not only avoid penalties but also build trust with clients. Additionally, maintaining open communication between departments ensures that everyone is aligned on goals and can collaborate effectively.?

6.???? What are the most challenging aspects of your job?

?As a trainee accountant, balancing learning with client work can be challenging. Another significant challenge is navigating the ever-changing accounting and tax regulations, which requires staying up-to-date and understanding how these changes impact clients through constant learning.

7.???? What do you like to do in your spare time?

?In my spare time, I enjoy farming, especially working with sheep and cattle. I love spending time outdoors and taking care of the animals. I also enjoy socialising with friends and exploring new countries.

8.???? Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

I spent a year in Australia, where I went snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef, flying over the Whitsundays, and skydiving over the Gold Coast. I also worked for three months on a dairy farm and kayaked with Dolphins. It was an incredible experience, and I loved meeting people from all over the world. That year shaped my appreciation for adventure and reinforced the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone, which has served me well in my professional career.
