Introducing the Indiverse

Over the weekend, I made a re-post by Peter Bergstrom of a Forbes article talking about how the e-commerce giants are already setting the stage for selling in the emerging metaverse.

Good share?Peter Bergstrom?but before all this happens we need to secure our identities so the GAAFTM (big tech) don’t continue their manipulation of people. This article talks about the ultimate in personalization for e-commerce in the metaverse based on all the data they do and will have on us whether we like it or not; and we’ll tolerate it like we do today because of the convenience.
But it’s going to be the exact opposite as we begin to Self Sovereign our Identity and gather our verified digital assets (whether we call them Verifiable Credentials, NFTs, or tokens) into secure digital wallets. We’ll be able to mask our identity not just with avatars, but by generating new zero knowledge identities while we present our verified attributes as Requests for Proposals for the things we need to buy rather than have them pushed on us. Then when we have acquired what we want, we revoke access to the attributes used for the proposal. This is called the Intention Economy (Doc Searl). But we can’t achieve this state even in today’s Web2 world until we as individuals take control of our personal information.
I call how we structure our digital wallet for the metaverse, our Indiverse - where we are the center of our own metaverse and the vendors cater to what we say we need or want, not what they tell us so!
Planting the hashtag flag now?#Indiverse

Please forgive my first illustration of the Indiverse (above) of what I am talking about - I am NO GRAPHIC DESIGNER! That being said, in everything I am doing today, whether it's teaching undergraduate students, educating our state and federal agencies, pitching corporations, and talking to people one-on-one, I am evangelizing the need for EVERYONE to Self Sovereign their Identity through decentralization.

And I don't just mean leveraging blockchain technology - necessarily. We can actually decentralize our identity outside of using blockchain by de-identifying our data from the 1000s of central databases that hold our personal identity information (PII) and putting the links to that data and our identity in a cryptographic wallet that sits in a controlled environment by you - like your mobile device, computer, cold storage device, or even your own home-based cloud server. As long as your identity credentials are not attached to the data outside of your control.

Of course, blockchain is useful in removing the third-party verification of your personal assets when issued as a Verifiable Credential, Token, or NFT.

We will always live in a physical world of reality, but we are moving closer and closer to a virtual world in which we can also set our minds to live, work and play just like we do in the physical. This emerging world is called the metaverse and it's not really a place yet. The?metaverse?is an emerging simulated digital environment that uses augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and blockchain along with the framework of social media to create rich user interactions that mimic the real world. The term "metaverse" was created in a 1992 science fiction novel called?Snow Crash as a?blend of the word "meta" as transcending and the word "universe." Early stages of the metaverse have been developed as?virtual world?platforms like Second Life. Some?metaverse?iterations involve integration between virtual and physical spaces and virtual economies with products and services that advance virtual reality technology.

As with all reality today, these experiences are first-person meaning we are seeing the universe through our eyes and representing ourselves to the environment and other people in it. However, not only is there the enhanced risk that the GAAFTM and government will be able to track and trace our every move more easily in a metaverse, but it could well make hacking of our avatars and doing what they want to do while "looking" and representing themselves as us with our assets, attributes, and credentials.

I would also like to reference Jessica Mathews' article presenting the imminent problems of identity in the metaverse when it comes to crime, child abuse, and misinformation. She addresses some very serious issues. Her only problem is she is telling us we need the government to legislate and control the metaverse to make it safe. If our government can't do so in Web2, how can we expect them to in Web3? We must take it upon ourselves as the builders and evangelists of the future to protect our identity and that of our family members. We are responsible for what the GAAFTM is doing to us today, not the Federal Government (of any country) nor the UN, not NATO, and not even Xi Jinping for the 1.4126 people of China.

We must all work to establish and adopt the open standards of Self Sovereign Identity in our governments, our corporations, and our personal daily lives today! We can secure our identities today and we must for the future when we may exist, live, work, and play in the virtual worlds of the metaverse. All of our assets, attributes, and credentials can be protected in our own Indiverse, as self-sovereign, which in and of itself acts like what we think of today as our "wallet".

If you want to read some more thoughts about where we are with the metaverse and how it is controlled by the GAAFTM, Bosco Bellinghausen published this article about 5 months ago. You should also follow Jamie Burke if you want to learn more about the open metaverse projects that Outlier Ventures is backing to assure that there is no central control of the eventual metaverse, only virtual worlds inside the metaverse that may be and then you can decide whether you want to enter them or not on your own accord.

Great explanation on how self sovereign identity and democratization of data is becoming more understood. The digital wallet, consumer/ individually controlled makes a lot of sense. This helps with securely being able to keep control and usage in hands of US- people!
